Empty Username?
Question asked by Ricky Hignite - 12/3/2014 at 12:23 PM
Answered
I have a domain with a useraccount that had no username or password. I was able to go in and change the password but I can't find what the account should be or even delete the account to get rid of it. When I try to delete it, it just flashes and nothing happens.

Any advice on how to get rid of it? :)

If you look in the accountList.xml file (C:\SmarterMail\Domains\{domain}), is there an entry with a blank name attribute?

Yes:

<Address type="User" name="" />

Would I be able to remove that entry, restart the SM service and that account be gone permanently?

Ricky, from your screenshot, it looks like that blank username at one time was associated with Jay Radio.  If that username account folder still exists (but is not currently accessible) you can change the blank name attribute to the corresponding folder name for Jay Radio.  Restarting the service should fix that issue.

If you no longer want the Jay Radio folders (if they exist), you can remove them and the <Address> entry in the xml.  Again, restarting the service will stop the blank user from appearing.

Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns on this matter.

I looked through the \user\ folders and didn't see anything that would correspond to Jay Radio. I was able to impersonate the user and sent an email that way. I checked the folders and the time stamp of change to see if maybe one of them would be to a user that didn't exist. All the ones in there that had been changed at all today went to an actual user account. There is no folder that has radio in the name at all. I even went through the spread sheet I had of the email accounts we migrated onto our server a few months back. That didn't show a radio account either.

When I impersonated the account, it wouldn't take me to the inbox when I clicked the inbox icon. It would take me to the My Today Page but not show the folders to the left like you would normally see. It would only show the Settings options which impersonate defaults too. From the My Today Page I could click on the 1 showing that 1 email was in the inbox. That one email was the password compliance policy that we sent out that it violated. I read that email and the My Today Page changed to 0. I could still click that 0 and view that read email. I couldn't ever see other folders listed to the left. It did have full address book though.

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be an easy way to tie the blank username with an existing folder. I would recommend removing the entry from the accountList.xml. If in the future, someone mentions that they can't access that Jay Radio account and know the original username, you could add that entry into the accountList.xml or, if using SM 13, you can use the Restore User function (SysAdmin -> Manage -> Restore).
