Missing features that prevent migration from Exchange to SmarterMail - 2: mail messages Colour Categories
Problem reported by Gabriele Maoret - SERSIS - 9/8/2021 at 6:06 AM
Being Fixed
The second (in order of number of requests) missing feature migrating from Exchange that make our users complain is the ability organize and categorize email with Colour Categories.

Outlook + Exchange do it like a charm, SmarterMail doesn't support that and if you use it in Outlook you loose all your data migrating to SmarterMail and/or resyncing/reconfiguring Outlook.

Is this function planned?

Migrations use Exchange Web Services and we are restricted to the capabilities within the protocol.  Microsoft went through some odd transitions with categories in Exchange, Clients and Protocols over the years so its somewhat basterdized.  I've asked the EWS team to take another look.

@Tim: losing prior coloring only on new migrations would probably be acceptible, if this cannot be kept during migration at all, but during normal work and re-syncing/re-setup the mailaccount and then loosing all categories/color-tagging is a no go in our users view - so please sync/store these information/categories/coloring with your server.

Our employees are working with Outlook/MAPI and eMClient/EWS (and not at all with Webmail!) - and for organizing their emails they want color-categories, syncing with SmarterMail-server - so that they do not want to lose their organizing/categories/coloring tagging/flagging in case of any sync/re-sync issues. There are reasons where we need to remove an user/mail-account inside eMClient(EWS) and then the user is losing all his "coloring/categories" on re-sync to eMClient(EWS-protocol). For exmple setting up their mailbox-account on a second installation/system (like notebook).

So please keep in mind that we need a working solution even if only using/cateroziring by an email-client (like Outlook and eMClient) - not only for Webmail-access. For our business-usuage it is important that we can organize by standard-mailclients. I suppose Outlook (with MAPI)  and eMClient (at least with EWS)  are definitiely "standard clients".
Hope you devs/protocol-team will figure out/ and realize a working solution! Many thanks in advance.

Regards,
Thomas

We just had a brief meeting on this and you have summarized what was discussed.

We just introduced some dev tasks for our upcoming BETA which will resolve some of the inconsistencies and we also discovered we can gather the information for Migration.
