Server Migration
Question asked by J Lee - 8/21/2021 at 9:29 AM

Hi All
Creating this because it is the weekend and support is closed.

Anyone have updated info for this KB article?

These 2 files no longer exist in the most recent build.

Note that mailConfig.xml and domainList.xml are the only files absolutely required to be copied over.

Yes!  You'll want ALL of the stuff in this folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterMail\Service\Settings

Thanks!

That is correct Ron. You'll need everything in the Service\Settings directory, and your Domains folders in their entirety.

Thanks, Kyle I have so much data I need to run richcopy while SM Service is running on the source server. Are there any problems with doing this other than open files will be skipped?

For your target server, I would recommend leaving SmarterMail turned off.

Research Robocopy.  A free windows utility.

Run the first migration which could could take many hours or days or weeks. Turn on logging.

Subsequent runs should only take minutes because Robocopy is only completing an exact mirror, not copying files that were already copied to the new server.

Stop both SmarterMail instances on your last run.

When done, start the new SmarterMail instance.

Good luck,
Ron

Ahh, RichCopy and RoboCopy are basically the same but different.  I had not heard of RichCopy and just learned something new.

Hi Tony

Thank you, you guys might want to think about changing one or both of those KB titles. The same title for both articles, you can tell that they are different from the search results

Hello,

I have sent up a proposal to adjust the title/subject. Currently, the indication is in the Grey banner at the top of the KB and should be there for all KBs to indicate the version supported.

Current

VS older

Thank you

The Smartermail Migration went pretty smoothly and appears to be functioning properly within normal limits. We found the robocopy or richcopy should be run a minimum of 3 times per 500 GBs of data.

A couple of steps could be added to this help file.

  • Export all your SSL certs in IIS and Import them on the new server.
  • You will need to recreate all Bindings on the new server.
  • Don't forget to migrate of Certs folder for your SSL/TLS ports to work on the new server
  • Don't forget to migrate any login screen customization and login page background images.
  • We changed the data drive letters, so all the domains show up as "Failed to Load" domain, we had to Detach and Attach all domains. This probably can be done in the json file but we did it manually.
  • You will also need to open your firewall up for your email ports or open your firewall up for the Smartermail exe. %ProgramFiles% (x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterMail\Service\MailService.exe
