Email Retrieval via IMAP does not update the READ status (read / unread) and DELETED satus of the emails
Problem reported by Gabriele Maoret - SERSIS - 7/12/2021 at 12:17 AM
Not A Problem
I'm using SmarterMail 7859 and I am preparing to transfer some users from an old mail server to SmarterMail.

The starting servers are MS Exchange or Kerio Connect.

To transfer the emails I use the Connectivity --> Email Retrieval function via IMAP set automatically, so the emails are updated from the old server to the new SmarterMail as they arrive and the day that the switch will take just a few minutes.

The problem is this: if my client reads a mail on the old server (and then it goes to the READ state), the state of the same anon is updated on smartermail (it remains UNREAD).

The same happens if I delete an email from the old server: in SmarterMail the email remains and is not deleted.
Furthermore, in this case the situation is even worse: the e-mail deleted from the INBOX of the old server remains in the INBOX of SmarterMail, and moreover (since in the old server the e-mail is moved to the trash) I find a duplicate in the trash folder (or in the corresponding in Italian ) of SmarterMail. So the deleted emails are even duplicated!

This is a big problem and makes Connectivity --> Email Retrieval via IMAP near to useless.

Email Retrieval is intended as a way to consolidate messages sent to multiple email accounts in one account. As a result, whether Email Retrieval is configured for POP or IMAP, it does not keep retrieved emails in sync with the originating account. After a message is retrieved by SmarterMail, we do not check for updates on that message. We simply check for messages with new UIDs that we have not previously seen in that folder.

This explains why you are seeing the duplicate appear in the Deleted Items folder. Since SmarterMail doesn't look for updates on the messages it already knows about, SmarterMail is not informed that the message has been removed from the folder. Then, when looking for new messages in the Deleted Items folder, SmarterMail sees the deleted message with a UID that it has not seen in that folder, and ends up retrieving the message.

OH, ok...

So that's not a good method to anticipate a two-server sync some days before a migration...

Is there a method to do this?

Or, maybe, can you add an option like "take folder in sync" to be ON/OFF using IMAP retrieval?

This can be a good feature to who need to sync huge mailboxes before a migration to SmarterMail from other servers.

Can you add a feature request to that?
