EWS connection not working with BlueMail and AquaMail Android apps
Problem reported by Gabriele Maoret - SERSIS - 6/3/2021 at 1:34 AM
Resolved
Since the EAS connection does not work as expected (I already have a ticket open and I have been waiting for months for the problems to be solved ...) I wanted to try to use the EWS protocol as an alternative.

BlueMail for Android supports EWS and so I tried using it.

Unfortunately, it's not working...
Iit's seems to be unable to sync with the EWS server.
The account is created and autenticated correctly during the creation phase, but then when I open the inbox there's no sync and it says "Cannot connect to server"

Hoping that this problem will be solved soon, I also ask another question: are there any other APPs that support EWS that you can try?

Hello Gabriele, I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with this. I haven't tested EWS on Bluemail myself, but can add a task to test this further internally in the next few days. In the meantime, I know that EWS/EAS/MAPI are all pretty dependent upon both Autodiscover and HTTPS security, so I wanted to ask about these on the domain you're testing with. Do you have a valid SSL certificate deployed on the mail.domain.com and autodiscover.domain.com hostnames for this domain?

Hi Kyle! THX for your time.
Yes I have bot SSL certificate and autodiscover working.
MAPI is working well.
EAS is working but with some blocking bugs already known (I have a ticket open for it waiting the release of EAS 16.1 that seems to be imminent. Tony Scholz knows).
EWS is working really well with EM Client.

But with BlueMail isn't working.... Don't know why...

Next days I will try with AquaMail

I'm now testing EWS account with AquaMail: in this case I cannot even log in.

AquaMail says: "invalid Server response"

@ Kyle Kerst  : can you please try both AquaMail and BlueMail android apps with EWS protocol?

Those two are the only apps supporting EWS that I know.
If there're other please make me know.

As I previously say, I'm testing it because in SmarterMail EAS support is really broken as it is now.
I already have a ticket about EAS issues tha's open till February and the answer is "wait for EAS v. 16.1 update to be available...)", but I cannot give that to my customers...

I have been recommending NINE to my Android users who cannot connect reliably using EAS with the Google Exhange client. (Basically anyone with a new phone.)

It is $15 U..S. (one time) after the 2 week trial,.   This is an obstacle for people who think everything should be free.

NINE connects directly, no intervenng services to spy on you, and no advertising.   For me, this is well worth $15.  I have been very pleased, based on limited teating.  I looked at it because SmarterTools has refernced it favorably.

I do not recall if they also support EWS.

Nine works great with EAS & SM15 (not trying to beat a dead horse, but that's the version I'm still on as it's crazy stable). The only big issue is that searches are limited to recent emails. Probably the same with more recent releases of SM.

Any news on this issue now that the "new" SmarterMail is released?

While we were updating the EWS implementation, we did test with AquaMail and BlueMail. Based on my last tests, AquaMail should be working with the current version of SmarterMail.

As for BlueMail, as Andrea and Tim noted in the BlueMail Desktop doesn't work with SmarterMail using EWS protocol thread last September, we identified some issues while testing. We tried reaching out to BlueMail multiple times in the hopes of addressing those issues, but we never heard back. As a result, we were unable to do further testing with BlueMail.

THX guys, I will test Nine in the near future.

BUT... does anyone know if there is a client for Android (and maybe also for iOS...) that works with EWS (not EAS...)?

It should support (besides mail) also calendars and contacts...
