Windows Defender and/or other Anti-Virus - running locally on server?

Answered
So was reading the thread about new install and Windows Defender.
Am a little curious... Should Windows Defender be running on a production mail server.. accessing the email folders????   We don't allow that .. for any antivirus...
Maybe I misunderstood the thread... but I thought that Windows Defender and/or other viruses scanners running against email folders / inbound spool was a bad idea.  Am I way out in left field on this??

Hello,

The newest release of SmarterMail has added some integrations of Windows Defender to provide some options for AntiVirus. You would still want to exclude the mail folders and root-install any locally running AV to avoid issues with your files.

Thank you
