Can not add attachments to emails after restore
Question asked by Jarod Clark - 5/11/2021 at 1:08 PM

Windows Server 2008r2
Raid 1 - C:, M: drives
Raid 2 - S: drive (current smartermail installation)
SmarterMail Version - 15.0.5962

We had 2 drives in raid 1 fail. That array included drives c: and m:. Drive m: has an older version of smartermail installed on it and isn't being used.
I replaced the bad drives and restored from our backup, starting with drive C:. When the c: drive was complete I rebooted the smartermail server to verify that the server would boot. When it did boot up to Windows server, I checked smartermail and I was able to log in. Since the email server had been down ~ 10 hours at that point I verified email was working and called it a day. I planned on restoring drive m: later.

Within a day I received emails from clients unable to add attachments to their emails. Thinking it was related to the missing drive m: I restored it from the backup. After the restore was complete I checked and I was able to add an attachment to an email.

The next day our clients couldn't add attachments again. Checking the smartermail self diagnostic report showed it was using C:\Windows\Temp for the temp folder. Looking at the c: drive showed zero space left. I did a cleanup on it and was able to free up about 4gb. And the attachments are working again.

So can I have smartermail use a temp folder on drive m: or drive s:? If so, is that set in smartermail and where is it set or does that have to be set in Windows Server?

We are planning on upgrading to newer hardware and Smartermail in the near future, but we need this issue resolved first.

Thanks.

Hello Jarod. I don't believe the temp file location used can be modified, as this path is picked up from the .NET platform and isn't something configured in SmarterMail. Out of curiosity; what is filling up your temp directory? In the meantime, I'd recommend implementing a cleanup routine for that directory which should help keep things moving forward!

There's nothing in the temp folder now. Why would having no space in the temp folder keep attachments from being added to an email?
Thanks.

My theory is that we're likely using the temp folder for processing of those attachments, but am not positive as things have changed considerably since version 15 unfortunately.

Ok.

On another note, does the current Smartermail version work with Windows Server 2019 or just 2012r2?

The latest release of SmarterMail will work on Windows Server 2012 R2+, so Windows Server 2016/2019 are supported and have been tested both internally and in customer environments.
