I've made a similar suggestion long long time ago and also here in my latest post under this thread:

but maybe it would be good to suggest it as a separate idea.

What do you think about idea of having outgoing failover (or not - maybe just separate service for SMTP) gateway for outgoing SMTP connections?

Idea is simple (I know ideas are always simple :) but maybe we could discuss a little about it here): primary server is down and users can't send their emails - this kind of gateway would allow users to send their emails which would cut at least some of calls and tickets during primary server not being available.

Another advantage of this kind of gateway in connection with incoming gateways (primary MX server would not be present in MX configuration) is to have possibility to totally block SMTP connections to primary server (only incoming gateways would have access to this server over SMTP).
