SmarterMail Build 7459 and newer: Some Bugs
Problem reported by Stefan Mössner - 6/4/2020 at 10:49 AM
Resolved
Hello all,

I found some bugs with SmarterMail Build 7459. I'm only using webmail for accessing my mail box.

  1. When saving a mail as draft the mail body isn't shown with German umlauts. The subject containing German umlauts is shown correctly. Sending a mail opened from drafts doesn't solve this issue. The recipient gets a mail without the German umlauts. Writing and sending a new mail works with German umlauts without issues.
  2. Events or appointments for the whole day aren't saved with the start and end of the day of the event. They are saved with start and end one day before. But in the calendar you see them located at the correct day.
  3. The list of all events or appointments sometimes doesn't show the correct items for the selected page. You first have to switch to another page to refresh the view.
  4. Deleting unread messages will be set to read when moving to the paper bin. In the versions before the mails kept the unread tag when deleting (moving to the paper bin).
Kind Regards.

Hello,

We had the same issue for 1. after upgrading to the new version.

A workaround we found is to change the user webmail encoding setting from Iso to UTF-8. It seems to work on our side, but still this is a bug I guess.

Thanks for reporting them, Stefan.

#4 isn't a bug, though, and is in the Release Notes

Changed: Deleting an email will now mark it as read.

This is the same as how Outlook treats unread messages when you delete them, though it was a relatively recent change.

Hello Derek,

OK. I didn't see this in the very long release notes ;-).

Outlook has a lot of nice features but in my opinion not all features of Outlook should be seen as standard for all other mail software tools. I find it better to keep the unread tag when deleting unread messages.

Kind Regards.

Hello Sebastien,

thank you for reporting this workaround. I can confirm that with UTF-8 instead of Western Europe ISO the issue with German umlauts in drafts is solved.

Kind Regards.

Stefan, can you please open separate support tickets (if you haven't already) for the following as this will facilitate issue tracking:

  1. Events or appointments for the whole day aren't saved with the start and end of the day of the event. They are saved with start and end one day before. But in the calendar you see them located at the correct day.
  2. The list of all events or appointments sometimes doesn't show the correct items for the selected page. You first have to switch to another page to refresh the view.
The German umlauts encoding issue should be resolved in the next public build.

Robert,

thank you for your answer. I'm using the free edition so I can't open support tickets.

Hello all,

with the latest release, build 7482 the tag of unread messages is kept when deleting them (moving to the deleted items folder). Thank you SmarterTools for bringing this back :-).

But I don't find any hints about the issue with German umlauts. I think I've read somewhere in this forum that SmarterTools will correct this issue in the coming releases. When will this be corrected? With setting UTF-8 it seems that recipients get the messages without German Umlauts. Or there is an issue in SmarterMail when the recipients are answering the mail. When I get an answer I can see that there are no German umlauts anymore.

And I have still issues with

Kind Regards.

Hey SmarterTools-Team,

what about fixing these issues? Every one week there's a new version but the reported issues at your forum won't be fixed! And we don't get any information when this will happen. There's not only the MAPI to be fixed. There are issues with the web UI, too!

And I have one more issue regarding the appointments: Even when I invite an attendee to an appointment of a shared calendar and the attendee accepts it, the appointment is saved in the calendar of the attendee but there's no message about the upcomming appointment.

Note: All my reported issues are related to the web UI!

I'm curious about all these issues because all this worked fine with older releases of SmarterMail. So why do you change things without checking if the known features are still working? And why are you deleting features which are useful, for example sending a mail message to the attendee of an appointment of a shared calendar without having this appointment saved on the calendar of the attendee?

It's nice to have some features of Microsoft Outlook in SmarterMail but not all features of Outlook are really good and worth to copy. And I'm using SmarterMail not because of a high similarity to Outlook. I'm using it because of some really good differences. Otherwise I could use Outlook and won't need another solution.

Kind Regards.

Hello all,

and the bugs are getting more and more :-(:

Today I see that in the listing of the mails the subject is shown with html codes but in the preview pane it's shown correctly.

When will all these bugs be corrected?

Kind Regards.

@Stefan, thank your for reporting this. I have found and fixed the issue. It will be in the next public release. We do ask in these cases to create a separate community post to facilitate bug tracking.  PM me if you would like a custom build (based on latest public release) with only this fix in it.

Hello Robert,

thank you for fixing my last found issue. It's OK for me to wait for the next public release.

But what about all my other issues which are older? When will these be fixed? I opened this post with a list of bugs which aren't fixed yet and the list of bugs is growing…

Kind Regards.

Hello Robert,

I can confirm that with the newest public release, Build 7523, the listing of the mails the subject now shows foreign characters correctly. Thank you again for fixing this issue.

I'm still waiting for a fix of the other issues I reported in this post.

Kind Regeards.

Hello all,

and there's a new bug: Using the new Microsoft Edge (Chromium based) the German translation is only viewable when logging in, including the welcome message. After that all is shown in English.

How you are replicating #3.  Does this occur after modifying, adding, or deleting events?

Robert,

regarding my reported original #2 issue: I installed the newest release of SmarterMail but the issue isn't solved completely. In the appointments itself it seems to be fixed but now in the list of all appointments or in the calendar views there's still a shift of one day earlier and then you can't open the appointment any more. Opening appointments ist only possible by the list of all appointments.

Kind Regards.

@Stefan, can you PM me your folder-xxxx.json associated with your calendar and the exact timezone of the server, the account, and the client computer you're using?

Robert,

I'm not allowed to send you PM. I get the following message: You’re unable to send messages to this user.

The server has the timezone UTC+01:00 (Europe/Berlin). It's a shared calendar of the user Public. It doesn't matter which client you are using. I see this issue with Windows 10 and Microsoft Edge (Chromium based) and on Android 10 with Microsoft Edge browser.

Kind Regards.

what about my problem sending you a PM? Or is my last information enough for you to solve the calendar issue?

And again: What about the other issues:

  • UTF-8 instead of Western Europe ISO workaround: When saving a mail as draft the mail body isn't shown with German umlauts. The subject containing German umlauts is shown correctly. Stefan, I have added the Edge, UTF-8 workaround, and shared calendar appt to our issues list. I cannot replicate the All Appointments list showing incorrectly.  Please create separate threads for each of the listed issues; it will be easier to track progress and keeps the threads cleaner.

Regarding the issue "Using the new Microsoft Edge (Chromium based) the German translation is only viewable when logging in, including the welcome message. After that all is shown in English.": SmarterMail is now asking if the language should be set to German at the very first time you are logging in. Answering with yes does change the language to German. Very good :-).

I disagree with "Please create separate threads for each of the listed issues; it will be easier to track progress and keeps the threads cleaner.". I have some issues reported separately but it doesn't help to solve them faster. Sinde one year I'm waiting for a solution of the issue with the signatures showing the wrong mail address.

Kind Regards.

For #2 we recently opened a ticket about it and also other calendar issues discovered by our customers.
For example we have a customer that creates weekly recurring event, recurring on
monday. The original event is on monday but the next events are on thursday.
I don't understand that some of this is known since at least June and still not corrected ....
We're kinda hopeless here at the office

@Stefan - Regarding the issue with Microsoft Edge and setting the language to German, we have been unable to replicate this issue internally. Since you originally reported this issue, there have been some significant changes to how languages are handled, so it is possible that this issue has been indirectly resolved. Can you confirm whether it is still a problem?

I've got a similar bug with the € symbol.
Using Western European ISO is not working, with UTF-8 is working.

Regarding the issues with Western European (ISO), it appears that this issue is fixed. Based on our internal testing, it appears that it was fixed in build 7475, likely related to this release note:

Fixed: Encoding issue with Thai characters in Sent Items and Drafts.
Even with this fix, please keep in mind that the Western European (ISO), or ISO-8859-1, character set is limited. For a good breakdown of this specific character set, visit the following sites:
Of special interest, since it was brought up by Stefano, the euro symbol (€) is not covered by the Western European (ISO) character set. This is because the character set was first published in 1987, while the euro symbol was selected about 8 years later, in 1995.

Hi Andrew and thanks for your reply.
I have never had that problem in the past, just with the latest builds and just with webmail and MAPI.
Which character set do you suggest?
Thanks!

Stefano -

We are still looking into ways that we can get € to work when using Western European (ISO). In the meantime, it may be easiest to use Unicode (UTF-8) as a workaround, as that is one of the most complete character sets. An alternative would be to use Western European (Windows), as it is similar to Western European (ISO), but it has a more complete character set.

Hello all,

we are one step further: With build 7619 the list of all appointments shows the correct dates.Thank you, SmarterTools for fixing this issue :-). It took a little bit too long (5 months, see my first post in this thread) but OK, it's working now.

I'm hoping that the other issues will be fixed soon, too.

Kind Regards.
