LATEST SM BETA - still issues importing PST file with MAPI and Outlook 2016
Problem reported by Gabriele Maoret - SERSIS - 4/26/2020 at 7:23 AM
Resolved
Today I tried another PST file (it's my mailbox backup from Outlook 2016 connected to Hosted Exchange 2016 OVH) into my test account in SM 7419.
In Outlook 2016 it loads smoothly and I find all the content that should be there.
Instead in SmarterMail's WEBMAIL some content was loaded and then it stopped updating and now it is no longer updating anything from Outlook to SmarterMail nor from smartermail to Outlook.

Here is the MAPI LOG:

To be sure of the issue I made a new attempt by cleaning the whole account by deleting everything it contained and also following the instructions of this lik:

Unfortunately, even in this case I was not lucky, Outlook imported everything correctly, but in SmarterMail only a small part of the data appeared (the PST is about 19GB, but in SmarterMail the account only sees 8.8MB ...).

AND Outllok stops to sync with SM.

In the MAPI log there are a lot of  exceptions like these:

The log seems to show a problem with a date handling thing in the import process

Since the PST file is 20 GB I'm uploading it to a 7-zip compressed file, which is much smaller

Update: Your FTP server is slow... I have 50Mps upload, but my speed on your FTP is only 1-2 Mbps...

Gabriele, can you run a speed test with something like this: http://www.myspeedmeter.net/  and select LA as the server?  I'm wondering if it's being affected because of the overseas connection.  I can connect remotely from my home connection and I'm getting ~3 MB/s (24 Mbs) on uploads to the server.

I have just started a new import test of a PST (the older one of the two that I am testing) with the new version of SmarterMail, v. 7423. At the moment it is about 10 minutes that Outlook is working, in the MAPI logs I still don't see exceptions and in the test user's webmail 180MB of data has already been loaded and the counter is going up quite quickly.

Hopefully well, I keep my fingers crossed!

Tomorrow morning (here is 7 pm) I will give you an update on how this test went.

If all goes well then I will try with the second PST file.

I don't think that exception would stop the sync process.  I've not seen that exception when I was importing the same pst file into my local SmarterMail server.  Are there any other exceptions in the logs?

Hey Gabriele, I may have spoken too soon about it not stopping the sync.  I'll see if I can replicate with that pst file.  If I can't get that exception to occur then I may have to add some logging to find out which item is giving you the exception so we can further debug it.

those exceptions definitely stopped the sync.
No more data synced and no more lines in the MAPI log after the exception that I reported erlier.

Can this issue be due to Italian localization and/or Italian time zone?

I live in Italy and obviously my Outlook 2016, my PST files and my time zone are all Italian...

Maybe that's the case.  I know with MAPI all of its time properties are just integers from a certain point in time (I think from Jan 1, 1601).  So theoretically it shouldn't matter the locale.  We'll keep this in mind as we try to figure out the cause.

Now the sync with Outllok 2016 seems to be stopped (1,4GB of data imported and no growing in the last hour):

The PST file is around 13GB, so I will leave Outlook 2016 connected for a few more hours.
If everything is stuck like now, later I will try to close and reopen Outlook 2016 to see if it starts syncing again.

Update:

The sync process is not reliable because the synchrony between Outllok 2016 and SM 7425 stops often (it seems to starts again if you change folders in Outlook or if you close and reopen Outlook), and in the MAPI logs you can see a lot of exceptions.

I will try again to see if I can import all the PST by today, but I don't think it will work.

Later I will attach today's MAPI log after I have definitively closed this test, even if the sync will not be completed.

Hey Gabriele, we had an Italian Windows 2012 R2 server that I was able to test with.  I installed an Italian version of Outlook as well and it looked like it imported the data.

I wasn't getting the exception that you are seeing, which is what I think is causing the sync to stop working.  This is what I was hoping to replicate so I can debug the issue.  I may have to create a debug log specifically for you so we can track down this problem.

On another note, I believe the size you're seeing at the bottom left of webmail only reflects the email data so it will not match the total size of the pst file.  For instance, when I import that pst into my server it reports 4.2Gb of email data.  The pst file also stores more information than just emails, calendars items, contacts, etc., so its size will not directly correlate to disk size in SmarterMail.

Hi Larry, I know that the 13GB PST file is bigger than the real data, but this is the REAL content of the data in Outllok:

So the REAL data is more or less 11,9 GB.

Even assuming that the disk occupation shown by Smarter Mail is still a little less because it does not calculate some elements or because there are still things that take up less space, I would say that AS MINIMUM more than 10GB must be occupied.

So if you say that you had no errors importing the PST and your server brings you 4.2 GB occupied, well, I must say that I am 100% sure that you have not imported all the data.

4.2 GB is less than half of the space occupation you should see, so even with your test the import was not successful.

It is simply impossible that everything worked properly if you tell me that you only see 4.2 GB of data.

If you want to to verify, in your Outllok open the same property that I show you in the previous comment and check "Dati locali" (Local Data) vs "Dati server" (Server data)

They must be the same, otherwise you have the confirmation that the data imported into the server are much less than what is contained in Outlook, and therefore you also have the confirmation that the import of the PST to SM via Outllok did not work properly even for you.

Hey Gabriele, the size in webmail is only reporting email size on disk.  So it should be smaller than the pst, especially if you have contacts, tasks, notes, etc.  When I go on disk for that user and check the folder's properties I see 7.69Gb on disk for that entire account.  Keep in mind, that a pst file has a lot of metadata and properties that get stored differently on SmarterMail than an Outlook pst file so sizes will never match up.  If the pst file only contained the raw email bytes then we could compare that data with what SmarterMail reports.  Since this isn't the case then it's not a good comparison.

Also, once my Outlook finished importing all of the data into SmarterMail I looked at all of the folder counts in Outlook and compared them to the counts in webmail and they matched up.  I checked unread counts, read counts, and total item count and they all seemed to match up.

Finally, I'm going to work with you on this file through the ticket that you have open.  Since we can't replicate this issue and we're not seeing any other reports from other customers I will have to make builds with logging specifically to find the problem in your environment.

if you want next week we can work together and I can also give you access to my desktop and my servers.
But let me say that I am VERY skeptical about the fact that 11.9 GB of data in Outlook (not in the PST) become 4.2GB or maybe even 7.69GB in SM.

Something is not correct and I ask you to be able to check your test account and your test server, if possible.

Hey Webplusidc, having that error in the logs ins't necessarily an issue.  If you are having issues where a folder isn't updating items or isn't reflecting new items (so it stops syncing) then that's something we can look into.  If you're running into a scenario like that then please open a support ticket for us to troubleshoot further.

PST importing from Outlook 2016 to SM version 7440 is still broken.

After several hours only 220 MB of data is imported and Outlook stops to sync with SmarterMail.

After few hours the sync between Outlook and SM 7447 stops again and the MAPI log is full of exceptions.

So even in 7447 the MAPI sync is still broken.

I stop the test here because it is useless to keep it going.
