Spam on Alias IDs
Problem reported by Devang Shah - 2/3/2020 at 12:24 AM

Hi,

We are using SmarterMail Enterprise Edition Version: 16.3.6989

We are getting spam mails on any Alias IDs created on SM domains e.g. [alias id] alias1@domain.com which has target ids as [pop3] user1@domain.com / user2@domain.com as it seems that normal spam checks are bypassed for any mails which are sent on Alias ID & if the same mail is directly sent on user1@domain.com than It’s checked for spam & blocked as per spam setting

We’ve checked in forum but I don’t see definite solution to spam on alias ID

Can you clarify how your alias is setup? I'm on the same version with some users utilizing alias addresses for domains and/or indivual users. We get nearly zero spam come through even for public addresess, abuse, etc..

Are you saying that if a single message is sent with the user and user alias addressed that it skips spam checks? If the same message is sent to the user and the user alias in separate emails that they go through proper filtering?

yes, when a common spam mail is sent on alias ID, it gets through & deliverd to target mail box which is part of Alias table but same spam mail if sent direct on that ID than spam filter will block it

Emily had a good post about the filter order. Look at your filter rules and see if one is somehow allowing email to an alias to bypass the other rules.
