Change pop account to imap?
Question asked by E. Keith Dodd - 7/28/2019 at 12:35 PM

I have SM 16. Is it possible to change an existing pop account to imap? If so, is it desirable or better to delete pop & start from scratch with imap? Appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, etc.
Thanks

Hi Keith. POP and IMAP accounts are pretty much the same as far as the setup is concerned. The POP and/or IMAP protocols are how you connect to it. For example, right now your customer is POPing the account, correct? That means that all they need to do is set their mail client to connect to it via IMAP instead of POP. They may need to remove it from their mail client and re-add it as IMAP, but as far as your SM server is concerned, you don't need to change anything unless there is something I'm missing. Also, if they are currently popping it, you would want to make a backup of their current .pst file (if they are using Outlook) so they can import it into their account when they set it back up as IMAP. Please let me know if you have any further questions and I will be happy to help. Thanks.

Thanks!
Below is a screen shot for the account that is being accessed as a POP account by mail client. Do my settings show that it can be accessed as IMAP already, if mail client is changed to IMAP?

Hi Keith.  I've converted POP profiles to IMAP by performing the following:

  1. In Outlook, save the POP .PST file to the HDD.
  2. Remove the POP profile from Outlook.
  3. Set up that profile again as IMAP in Outlook.
  4. Import the .PST file into the IMAP account.
  5. The IMAP profile should now sync with the SmarterMail server.
I hope this helps.

Thanks! Client end, however, isn't Outlook. It's emClient and iPad/iPhone.
Think I know how to do the emClient thing (create a new account and repopulate any appropriate folders), and have read about iPad.

Info good, however, if I run into the Outlook situation.
Thanks
keith
