I will discuss this with the developers and see what options may be out there. Just on the surface I can see several issues if you this was to be changed globally with existing clients that are already using the current system
May need to be a feature request to allow you to choose your own character from a provide list of options. Depending on the code changes needed to validate choices this may be more of a major change than it sounds on the surface.
