How does the SMTP Out 'Rotate IP List' works?
Question asked by Etienne Wilderink - 5/12/2019 at 4:26 AM
Answered
I have configured multiple addresses as outbound IPs. Looking into the SMTP logs I only see that the primary IP is used. Can someone please explain how this works? I have searched through the documentation, but could not find anything about it. Also the two additional fields 'Rotate List Fail Ratio' (that has to be a value between 0 and 1) and 'Rotate List Fail Threshold' are not mentioned anywhere. Thanks!

I wish the list worked better (or at least improved) to where we could also specify SM to switch to another outgoing IP automatically after say x number of emails etc. instead of just failure rate.

So we are still o 15.x.   Based upon echoDreamz -replied.. there is only one functional gateway that can be used at time (unless there is a failure) ??  Seems like a step backwards, if that is true Would like here to be at least a "round-robin"  .. as indicated.. after every X; go to the next gateway.

These options will leverage the available list of IP addresses in a round-robin fashion as spooling occurs. I do know that there are active feature requests with our development team to expand upon the gateway functionality and configuration, so keep an eye out for future updates on that! For now though the configuration options will allow gateways to be used for specific domains, or in a round robin fashion.

Ill sell my kidney to get proper IP rotation in SM :) - IE rotate IP based on the number of emails sent through per address, or just select IPs randomly etc.

So the functionality is limited at the SMTP Out level there is no round-robin functionality.
Does the IP rotate list work at all? What is the purpose / behaviour of the two additional fields 'Rotate List Fail Ratio' and 'Rotate List Fail Threshold'? And what is a normal configuration where the IP address is changed in the event of multiple errors?

I believe the fail threshold is regarding bounced/undeliverable messages, I could be wrong though.

@echoDreamz - have you checked the SMTP Out card in b7068 yet? There are quite a few configuration options here that might accomplish what you're looking for now. We can do a standard rotate, specify an order, and set thresholds for failures as Etienne pointed out.

@Etienne - the IP rotation does work well assuming the IP addresses are physically bound to the SmarterMail Windows environment. I am unsure of the threshold questions you had as our help documentation does not contain a whole lot of detail here. As such, I'd like to ask our development team for further information on this and will follow up with you when I know more.

Quick update on IP rotation/threshold/ratios and their usage:

If the total number of success and failures is greater than the specified Failure Threshold and the Success/Failure ratio is less than the specified Failure Ratio, we will rotate IP addresses.

ok... i was convinced based upon the first employee it was working as desired..
but now; are you saying it ONLY rotates IF:
If the total number of success and failures is greater than the specified Failure Threshold and the Success/Failure ratio is less than the specified Failure Ratio
??

If the number of failures is greater than Failure Threshold and the Success/Failure ratio is less than the specified ratio, we rotate IP addresses per development.

Kyle,

Im looking for true IP rotation. IE based on the number of emails sent etc. IE send 100 emails, rotate to the next IP, send 100 emails, rotate IP and repeat over an over.

Merle; more information about the rotate IP functionality can now be found here:

Christopher; I've just confirmed this is on our feature request list and should receive review soon.

Was any traction ever made on this?

The link posted by Kyle doesn't explain it at all...

IP rotation in SmarterMail is VERY confusing, absolutely not wel documented and it doesn't wotk as expercted for a option like this...

We are currently on: SmarterMail Enterprise 100.0.8055.29927 (Jan 20, 2022)
Can verify that our round robin rotation is working as desired.
Right now we have two active out-bound email servers, based upon their activity.. each is receiving about 50 % share... so this, for us.. is working as desired.

Merle, for us, we are looking for a random IP each time or an option to rotate IP after x many messages. I think you are talking about gateways, not IP rotation.

So Question, What is the status on this ?  We are about to set up on the latest smarter mail.  If we have IP addresses from 2 separate service providers (one cable, the other fiber) Will smarter mail use both of those IP addresses to send out mail ?  will it rotate outbound so we build reputation on both ? And "Rotate" meaning 100 to IP 1, then 100 to IP 2 ?
