Hello Scott,
the clr.dll is a common .NET dll and does not provide a lot of information. Do you see the server running out of MEM or CPU when this happens.
Getting a DotTrace of the process when this is happening would help to track this down for you. Here is how you can grab a DotTrace.
- Download - https://www.jetbrains.com/profiler/download/
- Install, you can ignore all the extras. Just the DotTrace.
- DotMemory if you desire
- Once installed select "Attach to Running App"
- Click "Show all Processes" [ Image 01 ]
- Select MailService.exe
- Select Timeline
- Click 'Run'
- Let this run for at least 1 minute. [ Image 02 ]
- deselect 'Open snapshot immediately'
- Click 'Get Snapshot and Wait'
- Once this is done processing "Flushing data in Progress" click 'Detach'
- In the main interface select Snapshots -> Make a copy [ Image 03 ]
- Save the file and send over
This can be done for both MailService.exe and w3wp.exe

Once you have captured the information you can open a ticket and send us the file for review.
I want to add a note here. SmarterMail 15 is at EoL and will not have anymore patches or fixes release for it. SmarterMail 16 is also at EoL. We are still supporting and troubleshooting the version but if this turns out to be a bug you will need to upgrade to the latest Build xxxx version to get updates.
Thank you
