Hi Anne. How are you trying to open it? Are you saving it to your desktop first or just clicking on it in webmail? In either case, what happens when you try to open it? Thanks.

I am just clicking on it in webmail, I have tried clicking on the file name and the logo and nothing happens at all.

In smartermail15 you could just click and it opened.

As a last resort I have saved the file and used online file opener to get to the content, but yesterday my colleague received an email from someone else in the office which had multiple attachments and to view was going to be long process, so he asked the sender to just forward the individual mails, which got me thinking surely this can't be the intended process, and perhaps we are doing something wrong.

Thanks Anne. Can you please provide me with a webmail account on your server where there is an eml file I can try to open as a test? If yes, please send the account username and password to my email address in my signature. I'm aware that you do not know me, but we are a reseller for SmarterTools and a trusted part of the SmarterTools community :)

Thank you for the offer, but makes me nervous giving access to our system, (not that you can actually see a lot from my log in now that we have moved to SM17 and all sharing in the domain was all lost!!!), it is a minor annoyance. and ranks very low on issues needing to be addressed with SM17.

I'm guessing you use smartermail yourself if I send you an email with an .eml attachment perhaps you can check if it opens, direct from webmail.

Anne, I received your email and I responded before I came back here and saw your message so please disregard my response. I use SM 15x. Give me a few min and I will set up a test account on a SM 17 server. I will email you back from my account directly with the address that I need you to re-send to. Thanks!

wise woman stick with SM15, i really wish i had gone to teh expense of putting a new server in to support SM17 its been a real head ache

Anne, I was able to click on the attachments in SM 17x webmail and open them using Outlook (Outlook is what my PC associates .eml with by default). What happens when you click on the attachments in webmail? Nothing at all? Also, which build of 17x are you using? I'm using SmarterMail 17x Enterprise Version - 100.0.7040.

We don't have outlook on any PC's as we opted to use Smartermail webmail as an alternative to outlook as it did everything we needed to handle Email.

When click on the .eml after a significant wait Chrome advised there may be a risk in opening attachment to you wish to proceed or not If I proceed I eventually get a notepad pop up with what I think is the email code. this is when trying an externally received email  TBH im unsure if teh same happens with an email generated in smartermail.

This seems like it is working correctly. Since you have no program associated with .eml, notepad pops open to show you the email. What happens in SM 15x when you try?

I was able to open .eml files/messages that were sent from both SmarterMail and Office365 using Chrome. I just needed to right click the .eml file and select "Open with" then choose Chrome. (I actually had to add Chrome as an app since on my machine Outlook and Windows Mail were the only options, apart from IE.) Both opened up just fine and looked like HTML emails, just as they do in webmail and in Windows Mail. 

I didn't get any warnings or anything. is the icon used for the .eml file the Chrome logo or a blank icon? Mine use the Outlook logo, but a right click and "Open with" seems to work just fine as long as I select Chrome as the app I want to use to open them. 

We noticed this change in behavior as well. 

Linda, in SM 15.x clicking on the icon of an .eml attachment would open the message in a new window, just like viewing any other message within webmail. Now it just prompts to download, like any other file.

Derek, I just tried the "Open With" method in build 7040 and it just keeps prompting to download the file. I get the same behavior with Chrome, IE, or Firefox.

Jersey, that's interesting as a) I don't see that behavior in 15.x (we have an install here for testing) and b) I had 0 issues opening the .eml. Then again, I DID download it to my desktop. I should have mentioned that in my initial reply.

Please help How are you supposed to view a .EML attachment using smartermail 17?

We exclusively use smartermail so no outlook thunderbird etc on PC to help, just Smartermail accessed via Chrome.

I have received an email from customer asking me to view attached emails  (.eml files). in SM15 I could just double click the attachment and it opened as a new window. 

This inst a daily occurrence but when i does happen its extremely frustrating and doesn't look very professional for me to have to go back to customer and say I cant open a .eml file can they resend.
