Automatic setup of mail clients
Idea shared by Frank Jensen - 1/26/2019 at 5:44 AM

It would be nice if something like automx.org was build in to Smartermail.

automx makes setting up a mail account easy. All your users need to provide is real name, mail address and password. Their mail client and automx will safely handle the rest.

It generate a .mobileconfig that Apple users can open in safari and are then prompted to install the e-mail settings. Also handle Thunderbird autoconfig, but for Thunderbird it might be easier to base on the autodiscover function.

Hi,

SmarterMail already have autodiscovery functionnalities for IMAP/SMTP/POP/EWS/EAS as long as you enable them (it's per domain settings)
You also need to setup the correct DNS entries in the domain name like:

autoconfig A your.smartermail.ip
autodiscovery A your.smartermail.ip

Maybe reading this can help: https://portal.smartertools.com/kb/a2752/set-up-autodiscover-for-smartermail.aspx

Cheers.

Hello All,

I'm running SM 15.x I wanted to know do you have to have Exchange Web Services or Exchange ActiveSync to use/setup autodiscover?

Thanks,

Frank

Hi Frank! No, you do not need either of those to set up autodiscover in SM. :)

Frank J.. You can set up autodiscover to be used with Thunderbird :) Check out this other forum post from a while back in which I chimed in and explained how to do it... https://portal.smartertools.com/community/a90498/autoconfig-for-thunderbird-clients.aspx

Linda, as I read that post you refer to, it does not work with Thunderbird. Its a different url it read the config from - and that url is not supported by SM. (Also the content of the config might be a bit different, not sure about that).

For Mac its a total different story - it need a signed .mobilconfig to work.

I'm not sure why you think it does not work in Thunderbird. I set it up for someone a while back and it worked just fine for TB.

Linda, because SM afaik will not support the webserver files required by Thunderbird.

Again, that's strange because I have it working for a customer. Thanks for the article!
