Thousands of duplicates of the same email
Problem reported by YS Tech - 11/2/2018 at 4:05 AM
Resolved
I have a client thats had an issue after he marked everything in his archive folder to read.
This caused 1 particular email to duplicate tens of thousands of times.
Now I could just delete all the duplicates but i'm concerned if i do a bulk delete that it may cause further issues if there's a bulk issue?
Anyone had anything similar?

Anthony, thank you for reporting this issue.  What client and protocol is the client using that caused the duplications?

He uses IMAP in general but he does have a POP account (Outlook) setup to just archive emails (this only collects, the SMTP details are blank).
He uses AirMail on the Mac on desktop and IOS Mail on his iPhone.

I have added this to our bugs list.  I'll update this thread with what we find.

Thanks, we've tried deleting in bulk from AirMail and we just get the spinny wheel as if its locked up, obviously this may take a while to run, so we'll leave it like that until tomorrow.
If that doesn't work, we'll attempt a bulk delete directly from SmarterMail.

Is there a limit of around 20000 emails you can delete at a time from the smartermail interface (thats all it shows me)?
Or is that the limit that the software can process.
If I delete all the emails from AirMail (3rd party client IMAP) then things just lock up (AirMail) and it gets nowhere (smartermail doesn't delete them).
If i delete the max i can highlight (just under 20000) from within SmarterMail, then this deletes those and then presents me with the next 20000 ish (19934 or something). This is actually working.

So the issues:
1) How did this massive amount of the same email arrive in the first place
2) I can't seem to do bulk processes from a 3rd party application like AirMail or IOS Mail.
3) I only seem to be able to process upto 20000 emails at a time.

Thanks

I've discovered a couple of other issues while clearing down the 200000+ of the same email.
All actions were done in SmarterMail interface:
1) When you do a search on that name you are only returned around 20000 of those results (I know this because once you've deleted those items you are presented with another 20000 ish)

2) When you delete that amount of items, it shows the system deleting them fairly quickly but then looks like it hangs, but it isn't hanging, it then indexes that mailbox and then optimises that mailbox, this takes longer than the delete itself but there's no notification that thats what its doing.

3) Once i'd cleared the emails I was being returned from the search (I thought i'd completed the task), when I then viewed without the search and discovered another 35000 that weren't being returned in the search and could only be viewed without searching.

So I think there's an issue with the search not being able to find all the items in that mailbox
There also seems to be a limit to the returned results.
The system could do with notifying the user that the mailbox is indexing and then optimising that mailbox just so you don't try and do other bulk processes or restart it because you think its locked up.
Thanks

Anthony, have you updated to the latest version of SmarterMail 16?  If so, do you still have the same behavior.  In this latest version, the issue does not replicate for us against our test environments.
