Replies from Samsung Phones adding .txt Attachments
Problem reported by Joe Dellaragione - 10/19/2018 at 5:42 AM
Resolved
I started noticing this about 1-2 months ago. When I send an email to someone and they reply from their Samsung phone connected as EAS the email comes to me with an attachment named "Untitled Attachment XXXXX.txt) with a random number instead of those X's.

Inside the attachment is the HTML code of the reply. It has the text of the reply as well as <'div> and other HTML markups.

I tried both the native e-mail client on Samsung and the GMAIL EAS client and it's the same thing. It does not appear this happens with replies on iOS devices. Also it seems to just happen on REPLIES, not new messages and not forwards.

Has anyone seen this or have any ideas?

Can you verify what version of SmarterMail you are using.  Also you have <'div> written in the description.  Is it truly malformed with the apostrophe inside the div tag?  Is the Attachment a valid attachment?

Nope, I put that in there so it would not get embedded into my post.

I just did a clean test with a user having the issue, here is the result:

Sent him an email from Outlook and asked him to reply from phone: I see his reply in outlook, but there is an attachment named "Untitled Attachment 000068.txt" and when I open it I see:

1.    Reply to this email from your phone with any text.
2.    Send me a NEW email from your phone with any text.

Thanks!

Asked him to send me a new, clean email:  Came in fine, no attachment.

Sent him an email from my Galaxy S7 and asked him to reply from phone: I see his reply in outlook, but there is an attachment named "Untitled Attachment 000081.txt" and when I open it I see:

As an update I am also seeing a bunch of replies from other mobile devices with the same as above but the name of the attachment is "unnamed.txt"

SM version is the latest which I updated to last Wednesday hoping it would fix this issue.

Update 3: When I look at these emails in WEBMAIL the attachment symbol appears, but there is no ATTACHMENTS tab.

We have found the issue.  The fix will be in the next maintenance release.
