That's not a bad idea... The statuses are only used for chat, as far as I am aware. However, I would hate to make the chat window require two clicks to be opened. We could possibly do something like the Reply button - where you can click Reply or the dropdown arrow to open the menu. However, that might be tough with the minimal real estate available in that corner... I'll forward the suggestion and let you know what I hear!
