SmarterMail 16.3.6726 - folder "app_data" isn't accessible any more
Problem reported by Stefan Mössner - 6/1/2018 at 10:26 PM
Resolved
Hi all,

after installing the release 16.3.6726 of SmarterMail I don't have issues but I can't access the "app_data" folder any more because I don't have access rights. Even when trying to get access as local administrator.

I think there's something wrong with the permission settings when installing this release. Could you confirm this behavior?

Kind Regards

Hi Stefan,

Our developers were made aware of this issue and have since updated the download link for the latest SmarterMail with a fix. If you go through the upgrade process again, but use a fresh download of SmarterMail, the issue should be fixed. If you continue to have any problems I recommend opening a ticket with the support department so they can look into this further for you.

Hi Emily,

thank you for your update but even after re-installing the new build from your download page the folder isn't accessible. SmarterMail seems to work without issues in my environment. But it looks like not all updated installations are working...

I'm a home edition user. So I'm not allowed to open support tickets, right? And I've running my installation on a Windows 10 Professional machine. This isn't officially supported by SmarterTools. A Windows Server license is too expensive for me and my home lab.

Kind Regards

Stefan,

The next step would be to reset the permissions. You will need to change the owner on the app_data folder and then propagate your valid permissions back down. The screencast Chris Danks provided above shows you the steps to do this.

Looks like SmarterTools finally realized that the v16.3.6726 even in fixed/updated version of last Friday is still buggy! Right now I noticed already a v16.3.6729 updated Jun 4th 2018 available for Download :-)
Hope this version is better - and will not kill/destroy my server/folder-permissions.

btw: permissions MRS/App_Data were kind of restored/more like normal again after uninstall of buggy v16.3.6726, reboot, stopping IIS-site and then install the prior v16.3.6705

and now I will give the latest v16.3.6729 as of today a try :-)

hmmmmm - sorry, no luck.... with v16.3.6729 again on our Windows 2012R2 server the permissions were "destroyed" - and SmarterMail WebGUI/Login not accessible anymore!

sorry, but quality assurance of SmarterTools right now is really worse!
I really expected that at least this time the installer will work :-(

I do not trust the v16.3.6729 if I have to manually adjust/repair folder-permissions after installation to make this version up and running! At least if  this manual step is mandatory this time then SmarterTools should mark this as a required one-time-step inside the releasenotes! -but this is not mentioned in v16.3.6729(!)

I uninstalled SmarterMail Jun 4th 2018 and re-installed the v16.3.6705 - permissions are ok/as they were set before I installed "the buggy" installer versions!

Hi Emily,

even with build 16.3.6729 the issue regarding the permissions of the folder "app_data" isn't solved but the web GUI of SmarterMail is working.

I do very agree with @Thomas Lange, that a manual adjustment or repair of the folder permissions isn't trusty - even if it will solve the issue.

Kind Regards

Hello all,

We apologize for the inconvenience that resulted from Friday's faulty installer. Our developers were quickly made aware of the issue and had provided an updated installer on the Download SmarterMail page that prevented the permissions issue from occurring. However, the current build on the Download SmarterMail page doesn't modify the App_Data permissions.

They've just put out a new custom build that corrects the issue that occurred from the faulty installer. This new build sets NetworkService, Administrators, and IIS_IUSRS to Full Control. It will also NOT remove the current permissions if anyone has custom permissions on the folder.

Please let us know what you find with the custom build. If this goes as expected, we'll push this build to a minor release.

Custom build:

Thank you!

Hello all,

I can confirm that the folder is accessible again after installing the custom build, version 16.3.6731.

Thank you to SmarterTools for this new build. I'm wondering why the installer file size increased to nearly 100 MB?

Kind Regards
