Messages Remain in Spool After Deletion

A user through Outlook attempted to send a message that became stuck in his outbox and went into a loop of 'failing' and attempting to resend. The message was right on the line of our max message size, so we quickly were alerted and stopped further messages.
When I deleted the messages from the Spool within Smartermail the messages remained in the spool folder on our server. It has been 24 hours and it and others have remained. Any potential solutions for this?
