Issues and ideas regarding SmarterMail 16.x
Problem reported by Stefan Mössner - 9/23/2017 at 12:10 AM
Resolved
Hi all,

is there a possibility to set the birth date for contacts in the global address list under the messanger section by keyboard input? In this release (16.3.6474) I can only set the date with the calender which is very uncomfortable when the year is very far away from the actual date. And when setting the correct date, saving the settings and reopening the contact the birth date is one day earlier, i. e. when setting 10.05.1977 and saving this the date is set to 09.05.1977 after reopening the contact.

Again, thank you very much to SmarterTools for implementing the advanced search and now setting string as the default search criteria. It works but it's slow comparing to the search in SmarterMail 15.x and earlier.

And the search should be accessible at a more prominent place because it's a often used feature. It's still hidden behind the folder icon at the bottom of the left window pane. This isn't very user friendly. It's a very often requested change by the community. SmarterTools, please make the advanced search accessible an easier way. What about placing a button on top of the window near to switching between mail and calendar etc.?

Kind Regards.

Hi all,

with SmarterMail 16.3.6488 there are no changes regarding the issues in my first thread!

SmarterTools, what's the problem with making the advanced search reachable easier? And the issue with the birth date isn't fixed yet. When will this be solved?

Kind Regards.

Hi all,

with SmarterMail 16.3.6496 the birth date issue isn't still fixed! And the advanced search is still hidden behind the folder tools button.

SmarterTools is locking it's version announcements. Won't they know what the users say to the new releases?

I'm still working with the latest 15.x release in production because the issues with 16.x won't be fixed as expected.

I never had to wait so long for taking a new release to production. Will this release be the end of a 7 year lasting and happy usage time of SmarterMail? Hopefully it won't. Come on SmarterTools, have an ear to your users and make SmarterMail 16.x ready for production use.

Kind Regards.

With all due respect, why the rush to upgrade? If v15 is working for you, don't sweat it.

One of my clients is happily on an even older version, and that's working fine.

Just sayin'

Hi all,

today I tested SmarterMail 16.3.6508 and again none of my reported issues are fixed. SmarterTools is ignoring them since 8 weeks!

These issues aren't acceptable for users becasue they are using the features very often. And I don't think that it's complicated to fix this.

There are some great improvements with SmarterMail 16.x but in my opinion SmarterTools should make the product more user friendly.

Kind Regards.

Apparently, it's indeed complicated to fix this, or those issues would be fixed.

I am also seriously considering downgrading from v16 to v15 because there are to many issues in v16...and they don't seem to get fixed. Among other things there are still way to many problems with recurring events in the calendar. Some one-day events are suddenly shown as two-day events and editing an event on my smartphone (using DavDroid to sync the calendar) corrupts the recurring event schedule.

The latest version (16.3.6522) also has a new bug which caused some messages not to be correctly shown by the email client on my mobile phone (only subject, no content). Downgrading to 16.3.6508 immediately fixed this issue.

And today I found out that often when I create a message and add attachments the message has no more attachments once it has been send; even the message in the "sent items" then also has no attachments.

I'm still using SmarterMail 15.7.x as production system. SmarterMail 16.x is running in a closed test environment until the bugs were fixed.

Hi Stefan,

do you have problems with other recurring events in the calendar? That is the reason I downgraded to 15.7....only to find out that 15.7 also has problems with recurring events :-(

I had to go back to using Google calendar (which I really didn't want to do) because the SM calendar is simply unsuable (at least in combination with my Android phone).

BR, Ton.

Hi Ton,

no, I don't have issues with recurring events in the calendar. I only work with SmarterMail using the web UI.

Kind Regards

Stefan

Hi all,

with version 16.3.6535 the birth date issue is resolved. But there's another issue with it: When changing the date in Microsoft Edge the date wouldn't be refreshed in the field. Edge has two input modes for this field: By clicking on the text there's a quick fill out option like on mobile devices for changing the date. When changing the date the field wouldn't be refreshed with the new date. The other option is provided by clicking on the calendar icon where the calendar input frame of SmarterMail will be shown. Changing the date with this input option refreshes the field. When using Microsoft Internet Explorer only the calendar input frame of SmarterMail will be used for setting the date and this also refreshes the field like in Microsoft Edge.

The advanced search is still hidden behind the folder menu at the bottom of the window.

Kind Regards.

Hi all,

now after testing with SmarterMail 16.3.6544 I see this behavior when changing the birth date:

When changing the date in Microsoft Edge the date wouldn't be refreshed in the field. Edge has two input modes for this field: By clicking on the text there's a quick fill out option like on mobile devices for changing the date. The other option is provided by clicking on the calendar icon where the calendar input frame of SmarterMail will be shown. But after saving the changed contact and reopening the contact again it shows the correct date.

When using Microsoft Internet Explorer only the calendar input frame of SmarterMail will be used for setting the date and this refreshes the field.

The advanced search is still hidden behind the folder menu at the bottom of the window.

Kind Regards.

Hi all,

SmarterMail 16.3.6558 brings no changes regarding the birth date issue with Microsoft Edge browser. SmarterTools, please fix it now.

Now there are a lot of new icons on the menu bar but why is there no one for the advanced search? I can't understand this. It's a very often asked feature for a long time. Come on SmarterTools, what's the problem with following the wishes of the users?

Kind Regards.

Stefan, what time zone and UI culture are you using because we can't replicate it.

Stefan Mössner Replied
Robert, timezone is CET and UI culture is German but in Microsoft Edge I think it's English. I can't say it exactly because the machine isn't running at this moment.

Tim, what do you mean? I didn't post and delete a comment. I think, you are in the wrong thread.

Hi all,

SmarterMail 16.3.6565 doesn't fix the issues. When accessing SmarterMail with Microsoft Edge the UI culture is German, too.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Stefan, we tried Edge before Windows Creator Update and it works properly. After Microsoft's update, the issue persists and is not isolated to just the German locale. The modal attached to the field is properly updating which explains why after saving and reloading the page it does show the correct field. For whatever reason, the input field itself is not updating properly.  To make matters even more interesting, if the field is blank it updates visually as expected.  It only occurs when the date-time input fields already contain a value.  We are still working on resolving the issue. I'll keep you updated.

Hello Stefan, The issue with the date fields not refreshing properly in Edge has been fixed and will be in the next minor.

Hi all,

SmarterMail 16.3.6572 fixes the birth date issue regarding visually refreshing the input field in Microsoft Edge. Thank you, SmarterTools.

But there's a new issue: After changing the birth date field and when it's visually refreshed the "Save" button is still greyed out and the change couldn't be saved. This is only the case if you change the field by clicking on the text. If you change the field by clicking on the calendar icon saving the birth date is possible.

And the adavanced search isn't still accessible by a button on the icon bar on top of the frame.

I wish you all a happy New Year.

Stefan, the input field requires a blur action for the data model to be updated. Therefore, you have to click off the input field for the save button to activate. We will look at checking this to a debounce action instead.

Hi all,

thank you SmarterTools for giving the advanced search feature a prominent place at the menu row with SmarterMail 16.3.6579 :-).

Regarding the greyed out "Save" button after changing the birth date with Microsoft Edge I can confirm that you have to click into another field or somewhere else in the window to get the "Save" button activated. Hopefully, SmarterTools will find a solution for activating the "Save" button without changing the focus of the cursor to another element.

Kind Regards.

Hi all,

with SmarterMail 16.3.6585 I can confirm that the issue with the greyed out save button after changing the birth date field with Microsoft Edge is solved. There's no hint for this fix in the release notes but it works :-).

Thank you, SmarterTools.
