Profile pictures in SM16 are streched
Problem reported by Ionel Aurelian Rau - 7/18/2017 at 1:45 AM
Resolved
Hello!

In SM15 all of our users had profile pictures uploaded to their accounts and they all showed up just fine. However, after upgrading to SM16 (currently using v16.0.6397), all of the user`s profile pictures are stretched (practically everyone got fatter over night :) ). Even if we upload new pictures, they all get stretched.

Can this be fixed? If not, can you please at least tell us the size/resolution/format of the image that we must use in order to not have the profile pictures distorted? Not to mention that any other place where you can add a profile picture will inform you of these details when you try to add the image - not sure why SM is doing this differently.

Thank you!

I reported a similar 'stretch' problem several months ago...

But there's been no reply as to whether/not this can be fixed. It worked fine in SM15.

Hmm, sorry, indeed I can now remember seeing that thread, but concentrated on the contacts issue.

Hopefully this thread will not go unanswered for 3 months, though :)
I`d be happy even with a simple answer containing the ideal resolution that SM16 wants the profile pics to be in.

Oh wow, I updated my post as it came off a little snarky (not intentional). Your issue with profile pics is new, but it's probably the same code. So hopefully one update will fix both profiles and contacts.

There's no minimum size per se, but profile images (and contact images) should have a 1:1 ratio, width to height. The ones we use for our GAL entries are 175x175 -- and they're the same ones we used since at least SmarterMail 10.x. That said, we'll look into modifying the ratio requirement in both areas.

In SM16, the aspect ratio changes when it resizes a pic. If you just lock the aspect ratio like SM15 did, you should be all set.

Thank you for the quick answer - after cropping the picture to a square and uploading it to the profile it will no longer be stretched. I`ll let all our users know to do the same and re-upload.

We're figuring out how we wanna handle this internally, since there are a couple different directions we can go. As far as having the server handle these images. You won't see it in 16.1, but I'll make sure to keep the thread updated.

Thanks for the update. For now we`ll just use square pictures for the profiles. Hopefully this requirement will not be changed in 16.1 as I do not have the face to tell the users to crop their pictures again :)

No, but something like having the server automatically crop the image, or have the server accept and display any aspect ratio. But nothing we do would make your users have to re-submit their image unless they wanted to use a new one.

This was resolved in 16.2.6439 with the addition of the image cropper:
Added: Image cropper that allows images of varying size to be used and cropped to fit a user's or contact's profile picture.
