new mail disappears after migrating to new server

I have been running smartermail on a hosted VPS server 2008 for a few years. yesterday i migrated to a new server 2012 machine. after migration, it seems like all emails disappear into a black hole.

all migrated mail is present on the new server
MX records seems to have the correct new IP
ports are open and there are incoming connections, imap connections are fine, logs show incoming smtp connections.
i have attempted multiple messages to/from gmail accounts with no luck
i used webmail to send an email to myself, and even that does not show up in the inbox, but does show up in the 'sent' items.

i am out of ideas on what to check here, any suggestions?
