How to create mailboxes based on Active Directory accounts
Question asked by Jim Bison - 3/7/2017 at 11:28 AM

Hello,

Looking for better information on how to connect / work with an existing Active Directory.

Can someone point me in the direction of the setup process for a new install of Smartermail and 'joining' it to an Active Directory domain (W2012R2)?  I have Smartermail setup but need to import users and create mailboxes for those users.  The Mailbox Migration wizard fails to connect to the Exchange 2010 server.

Currently stuck at the Mailbox Migration > Account Settings screen, specifically need the exact format for
Server Address
Username
Domain

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi Jim.  SmarterMail allows you to import new users from Active Directory via LDAP import.
Here are two KB Articles that should assist.  Just make sure that SmarterMail is installed within the AD Domain.
I hope this helps.

Just to clarify, we can only import AD via LDAP? A one way process? Does this mean we cannot setup and AD just for SM and allow SM to push/save passwords back to the AD?

My smartermail 16 server is in the same domain, but when I enter the same LDAP string used by other .NET apps, it fails, complaining it cannot find the domain.

Any ideas?

Hi John. Have you enabled the domain's Active Directory Integration feature? Log in as the Administrator and edit the domain. Please ensure Active Directory Integration is enabled on the Features card. Then, manage the domain and from the Import from LDAP modal, input the location of your active directory users via the LDAP binding string. An example LDAP string might look like this:

LDAP://testdomain.local/CN=Users,OU=Company,DC=testdomain,DC=local

If this doesn't work, I can help you contact the Support Department for their direct review.

Connie,

Yes, Active Directory Integration is limited to import and authentication only. It is a one-way connection. If your user is authenticated with AD, SmarterMail will always use their current AD password. In addition, the import will use only bring in their AD username (if directed to) and their AD password. All other account settings will default to what's set on the User Defaults template.
