Adding A Picture To Contact
Problem reported by ScottF - 9/21/2016 at 1:45 PM
Resolved
Some of our Windows 7 users are having a problem adding a picture to their contacts with IE11. Are others experiencing this behavior? Below is how to reproduce:

1. In SmarterMail Edit a contact
2. For Picture either drop or upload in the "Drop file or click here to upload" section
3. "Error. Try Again..." is displayed

SmarterMail Enterprise Edition
Version 15.3.6095

Thanks

I'm able to reproduce with .JPG files -- Error. Try Again.

But if I open the .JPG in Paint, save it as a .PNG, I'm able to add the .PNG image.

Maybe it's an issue with uploading .JPG files in IE? Same .JPG works in Chrome.

I just tried this again with 15.3.6109 and it still occurs with Win7, IE11, and JPG files. Hoping someone else can duplicate.

If you need a JPG to test, here's one (not an endorsement):

Here's a similar issue that should be easy to reproduce in SM 15.3.6109:
  1. Use Windows 10 with IE, Edge, or Chrome.
  2. In webmail, add a contact and enter a Display Name.
  3. Either drag/drop or upload a JPG picture and Save.
SM creates 2 separate contacts, one with the Display Name you entered, and another with a display name of N/A that has the picture you uploaded.

Should I open a ticket to fix the problem in the Oct 8 post above? It should be simple to duplicate using the 3 steps.

Here's an idea to take a big jump forward. Drop the picture in SmarterMail and sync the address book from a users's LinkedIn, Facebook, Gmail, etc.. Why should I have to upload pics for all my contacts when the pics already exist in these systems. This takes all the work out of it as it uses the pic that the addressee uploads. Plus now you have a unified address book.

Hey Kevin, I can replicate it so I can take a look at it.

OK, thanks!
Just curious, did you try the original problem with Win7 and IE? Some of our PCs work and some consistently fail. No rhyme or reason to it. Maybe a more descriptive error message instead of "Error. Try Again..." could help us figure it out.

I don't have a Win7 environment to test with but I could make a change to the error message so it is more specific. The problem with the error is it's generated from a third party javascript framework, so I'll need to make sure all error messages are localized on our end so they're readable by all customers.

Yes, that would be great. You could just display the error in English as most customers could deal with that. Or show a generic error if localized?

This should be fixed in the next minor release.
• No longer will there be duplicate entries when adding a contact photo.
• More descriptive error messages will be displayed when uploading a contact's photo.

Regarding the original problem posted by Scott above, here's my expanded error message:
Error. Try Again. (You can't upload files of this type.)
So I did some more testing and discovered:
  • Rename the .JPG to .JPEG and it works fine.
  • Same results in Settings->Account Profile when trying to add a picture.
  • I can drag/drop the JPG into the Compose window and it uploads fine.
  • Use IE11 to drag and drop into other programs (Google+, etc.) and it works fine.
So what is different about this method for Contacts and Account Profile?
