Does keeping messages in Quarantine affects somehow Spool performance?
Problem reported by Webio - 7/30/2016 at 12:42 AM

Hello,

how keeping messages (for example with viruses) affects Spool performance? I've enabled keeping messages in quarantine for 15 days and over time it started to hit whole system performance (CPU usage) and also SPAM filtering (using Declude). SmarterMail in Quarantine showed 5000 messages but there was A LOT more file in Quarantine directory. When I disabled Quarantine and removed all files from Quarantine directory CPU usage is on normal levels and Declude spam filterings works correctly again.

Any suggestions/ideas?

I'm wondering if someone from SmarterMail devs has checked this according to this thread:

http://portal.smartertools.com/community/a86462/a-lot-of-messages-in-quarantine-can-cause-mailservice_exe-process-to-use-a-lot-of-cpu.aspx

Situation was similar with only difference that this time SmarterMail apparently has some kind of display limit of 5000 messages which is probably not fixing this issue.

Regards

How is your declude configured, because the quarantine folder of SM quarantines viruses and emails that SM detects, if declude detects and quarantines mails it is a seperate process as such, so if you have configured declude to dump its quarantined mails into the sm quarantine folder, you could have more mails in the folder than what sm indicates, as sm also puts these files in dated subfolders.

We run declude on our servers, but we keep the declude quarantine folder in a separate folder. I then use fpreview to look at the mails and return any to the queues if required.

Yes with how we have it now having a lot in quarantine does effect performance of the spool, you'll probably notice higher CPU usage. It is something we have on our list of things to do. The spool area could use a rewrite.

I don't have declude configured to quarantine messages. I had enabled in SmarterMail for some time quarantine of virus messages because of recent ClamAV false positives. I've noticed after some period of time that systems where incoming gateways are being runned are using a lot more CPU than they did before.
