Can old .grp files be removed to free disk space?
Question asked by Mark DeLore - 7/18/2016 at 5:21 AM
Answered
I don't see them in a mailbox that I know is working 100% and has over 500 emails in their inbox.

I do know they can used to restore emails, but I don't understand exactly what / when / why they are created / used so I wanted to ask.

Each GRP file stores the emails for that day for that folder. So you will noticed the inbox probably has a decent amount of these files. If you delete one of them, that's effectively delete that day's emails from the inbox. If you are running on enterprise this feature can help too, message archiving. http://help.smartertools.com/SmarterMail/v11/Default.aspx?qq=%2fsmartermail%2fv11%2ftopics%2fsystemadmin%2fsettings%2fstorage%2fmessagearchiving.aspx

You can probably work something out with the user that you may pull all the GRP's that are older than X and archive them yourself, putting them in a separate location and zipping it up to conserve space, up to you.

Hi Mark.  You could theoretically delete GRP files to free up space.  However, you'd want to do that with the SmarterMail service stopped, and you would also want to delete the mailbox.cfg file inside of the folder you had deleted the GRP files from.  Then restart the SmarterMail service.
A safer method would be to enable Folder Auto-Clean.
