How to select a different "From" ??
Question asked by Curtis Kropar www.HawaiianHope.org - 12/23/2015 at 10:50 AM
Answered
When i go to compose a new email, at the top next to "from" it has a drop down list, but my email account is the only one in there.  What is that used or intended for ?  Is that were an email Alias would go (if it were possible to send from an alias) ?
What sets that box ?  Is it possible to select and send "from" a different email address other than the one i am logged into ?  What is the purpose of that being a drop down list ?

If you set up a domain alias (e.g. HawaiianHope.net), you will be able to select curtis@hawaiianhope.net in the drop down.

But I agree that it would be nice to be able to send from a user alias also: http://portal.smartertools.com/community/a1147/is-it-possible-to-send-as-an-alias-and-if-so-how.aspx

Hi Curtis!

You can add another account by setting up SMTP Accounts. When you have an SMTP Account set up, it will show in this dropdown so you can choose which account to send messages from.

Also, as kevind stated (thanks for your response, Kevin!), Domain Aliases will show up here as well, but user aliases won't. The reason you can send from the domain alias is because it uses the users' mailbox to send from, whereas user aliases don't have an associated mailbox.

Yes, that is what i thought it was for, "Alias"
I used to use Eudora for about 15 years, and in it there was an almost exactly the same setup, but you could set up multiple "personalities" (Aliases i guess) and select them on the fly as to which one to send from. So you could switch back and forth instantly from being "Sales" or "Marketing" or "Tech Support" or "JoeJanitor - Executive Director"

Strange that it will work with a domain alias and not an account alias

So wait... Can i set up an additional email account on our domain and then use SMTP accounts to access it ?

So now it can be used like an Alias,

From my understanding, the domain alias automatically applies to all users on the domain. And because each user within that domain automatically has the alias, emails are sent out from their mailbox and replies are sent directly to them. However, with a user alias, you don't have a way to specify the FROM address or the Reply-To address.

Yes, This can be a good work around for everyone wanting to send from Aliases...

Hey Curtis,

Quick update: We are currently reviewing this functionality (sending as an alias) as a planned inclusion in SmarterMail 16!

Thanks!
