Domain Administrator Problems
Problem reported by Luca Calcagnoli - 10/19/2015 at 12:05 AM
Resolved
Hi,
after installing  SmarterMail 14.3 Free I had some problems with the domain administrator account:
1. If access is performed by Primary Administrator ->Domain -> Manage the Domain Settings not appear in the left panel.
2. If I try by web interface comes the error "Email address or password is incorrect" even though user and password are correct.
Thank you

There are two different types of Administrator accounts in SmarterMail:

The PRIMARY ADMIN, which is allowed to be a name without an "@domain.tld" attached to the name. The primary ADMIN account can add domains, modify the core settings of SmarterMail, run reports, setup paths, and make other software level administrative changes and modifications.

The DOMAIN ADMINISTRATOR, which must be a complete e-mail address, eg: "user@domain.tld", and can only administer domain level functions. Domain admins cannot add or remove domains, etc.

Finally, remember that the "free" version of SmarterMail supports only ONE (1) Domain, with up to TEN (10) users. If you are successful in adding additional users, or domain s via the API, or try to import data from a previously installed and configured SmarterMail installation, which contains more than one domain, or has more than 10 users in the domain, SmarterMail will simply quit functioning and, if you try to login to the domain, or check e-mail, nothing will process.

I installed Smartermail on a new computer without import anything.
I created only one domain in Primary Admin account  but I can't add a new user to domain in Domain Administrator because I haven't Domain Settings area in left panel where add users, I see only "My Settings".
Thank You

You can only create one SmarterMail master admin account.

You must create a DOMAIN before you can create any users or domain administrators.

This is what I did.
1. I installed SmarterMail 14.3
2. I followed "Getting Started" and then with "Begin Setup" I created the Primary Administrator.
3. I followed your Configuration Tutorials and in Primary Administrator I added a new Domain(only one).
4. I clicked on "Manage" in domain just created and DOMAIN ADMINISTRATOR account(with complete email address) is opened
5. In this account i tried to create a new user but in Settings i can't see Domain Settings, only "My settings"

Anyhow I followed your tutorials step by step

where I wrong?

Thank you

Did you create only the domain administrator, or did you create the domain, and add the domain administrator at the same time?

When creating a domain Administrator, from within the domain edit function, you only need the name part, leave the "@domain.tld" off.

The domain admin will be named as the name you enter with the "@domain.tld" appended, and that, along with the password you established for the new domain admin is what you will login to the web interface of SmarterMail with.

IE: if your DOMAIN name is MYDOMAIN.COM, and your domain administrator is ADMIN, then the full domain admin login will be ADMIN@MYDOMAIN.COM and you will use the password you assigned at the time you created the admin in the domain edit window.

Domain admins CANNOT work in the core SmarterMail settings area, only in the domain in which they are created.

I did it. I created the domain and add the domain administrator at the same time with only the name (admin) part and password(as your tutorial) and this is ok.
My domain is created(DOMAIN.COM), my domain admin is created(ADMIN@DOMAIN.COM).
I have a problem when I want add a new user in ADMIN@DOMAIN.COM  because in this account I haven't the domain settings where add users like your tutorial configuration.
Thanks for your help.

I would attempt to download this custom build and install it.

I would then try and repeat your setup. We have seen an issue with domain administrators in 14.3, a random unconfirmed bug. It's worth giving this a shot since the issue you may be experiencing is close.

Is it possible to get a change log with these custom builds so we know what else has been changed? Don't want to introduce something new that could cause problems, confuse users, etc. Thanks.

Sorry I should have mentioned that this "custom build" is actually the same build as the official 14.2.5711 release.

OK, I didn't look closely and thought this might be a newer version.

I had exactly the same problem since SM14.3!
After removing and reinstalling SM14.2 I am able to add a new domain again.

It works, everything seems ok.
Can I activate this build by purchasing a SmarterMail Enterprise Edition 14.x license  from SmarterTools?

We are looking into getting this fixed. We were unsure if it was affecting just one person but it seems now that this is definitely an issue with 14.3.

Hello we have found the issue and we have a custom build that resolves this issue.
