Searching for a string with a period not functioning
Problem reported by secretwep - August 6, 2015 at 2:29 PM
Known
Using the Search function at the top of the message listing is not working for strings containing periods.  I often search for IP addresses (just as an example) within a folder containing error logs and it does not work in SmarterMail 14.1.  The same goes when I search for content containing programming namespaces such as "System.Web.IHttpHandler".  Is this expected behavior?  If this is a feature, it is going to make it really difficult to do my job the way I used to.

Hi John,
I've just tested this functionality locally, and I'm not receiving any errors in advanced search.  Did this begin after a recent upgrade?  If so, was the previous version uninstalled prior to that upgrade?

Hello,

This is regarding "Using the Search function at the top of the message listing", not the advanced search.  I'm just searching messages within the current folder.  In my particular case it is a folder full of server exceptions that are mailed to me; however, I tested it in other folders looking for items that have periods and it seems that periods are not interpreted as periods, but rather as special characters. This was not the behavior in v7.x as I could definitely search for items containing periods.

Example: if 114.4.77.0 is in the body of the email, here's what happens:

Search 114.4.77.0 - no results
Search 114 - proper results
Search 77 - no results

This is, well, fairly useless.

I have this issue all the time and so does my staff...

99% of the reason most of my staff still use a desktop email client is simply b/c web mail search just doesn't work...

I too have a terrible time searching for IP addresses which makes processing an abuse box really very trying and impossible...

Advanced search doesn't improve upon this either unfortunately :(

Rod,
Search needs a complete overhaul.
(both the search box and the "advanced" search)
Likewise, We cant find periods.

Here are some of my observations of trying to use the search box, not advanced search:
1) It seems that the periods are treated like spaces.  (or some other special character)
We have a folder with email alerts regarding the various domain names.  Domain names are contained in single quotes.  So for instance we have : " 'KWOHawaii.org' has exceeded a storage limit"
Searching in the search box for the domain "KWOHawaii.org" (without quotes)  returns no results.
Searching for a phone number like "808.352.8800" which is in the signature of most of our emails, returns no results

2) When you search for a term with spaces, it seems like it does the search as an "or" not an "and".
If you search for "storage limit"  it will return results with "storage" OR "limit"  not the actual literal string "storage limit"
I just did a search for "open office"  it found an email with the words "open" and "office" within the email, but separated. In fact i had to look at "raw content" to actually find those 2 words as they are not in the visible body of the email.
--- Subject: HTI MS OFFICE
--- Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="ms openid keys.xlsx"

3) searches seem like they only work with results at beginnings of words. In other words the search is looking at LEFT(search-term) and not CONTAINS(search-term)
Again, as in the first example we have domain names contained in single quotes : 'KWOHawaii.org'
Searching for   KWO  returns NO results
Searching for  'KWO  returns NO results (but makes the search pause a long time)
- with multiple emails containing the term "StoreOutgoingMessagesStatistics"
searching for "message" will return no results, or rather does not return any email with the string "StoreOutgoingMessagesStatistics"

we too noticed the search function in WebMail go from being pretty reliable and useful to non-existent somewhere in the last update or 2 that we did.  Doing the QUICK search now turns up nothing at all, no matter what you search on - left part of word, or included string within word, From, subject or body text.  The ADVANCED search turns up only a partial list of all items that it should be finding.

We are currently on v14.4.5801
