New user cannot login to email
Question asked by Norm - 5/23/2015 at 12:31 PM
Unanswered
I have just installed the latest beta version of Smartermail on Windows Server 2012, and created the first user.  When I try to login as that user I get an error message "user not found."  Same error message when I try to user impersonation.

Must be something simple, but I cannot figure it out. Any help appreciated!

Was this a new install or an upgrade?

If it was an upgrade, did you do a MAJOR or MINOR upgrade?

If you did a MAJOR upgrade, did you UNINSTALL and REBOOT the server prior to installing the new version?

Remember, with MINOR upgrades, you need to stop the SmarterMail service and IIS, run the upgrade and restart IIS - the service will restart itself as part of the upgrade process.

With MAJOR upgrades you always need to UNINSTALL the old version, REBOOT the server, to unlock any locked files, and then install the major version upgrade.  Once the upgrade is completed, you need to DISABLE the built-in SmarterMail web server and run under IIS as the SmarterMail web server is designed only to be used for installation and initial setup.

Either way, you can probably resolve this by uninstalling, rebooting, and reinstalling SmarterMail.

Hi Bruce,

This was a new install of the latest beta version of Smartermail (v14)

I am running it on Windows Server 2012 as an IIS site.  Authentication is currently Smartermail, not using Active Directory yet.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled, rebooted without no change.  I have deleted the application pool and site and recreated with no effect.

The only account that can authenticate is Admin.

I have been using Smartermail for some time now, and am testing the beta version so I am prepared when its released.

Any other suggestions?

Do you have IIS setup for anonymous authentication and have you disabled (not enabled) windows authentication?
