Set Up a Recovery Email Address

Recovery email addresses are important for a few reasons, not the least of which is the ability to reset an account password by using the "Forgot Password" link on a SmarterMail login page. (Should system administrators allow it, that is.) Another use for a recovery address is as a method for implementing Two-Step Authentication for accounts. Ideally, the Recovery Email Address is separate from their SmarterMail login, and preferably separate from their domain account -- so an email account on another provider, like Gmail or Yahoo! is ideal.

Setting up a Recovery Email Address is very simple, and is generally handled when a user first logs in to their SmarterMail account in webmail. When they first log in, they're presented with this simple modal window:

On this window, the user can set their Time Zone and their Recovery Email Address. However, what if the user forgets to add it when they initially log in?

If the user forgets to set up their Recovery Email Address, or if they want to change it, they can do the following:

  1. Log in to SmarterMail with their account information.
  2. Go to Settings > Account.
  3. On the User card, add or change the Recovery Email Address.
  4. Once the change is made, Save the changes.

That's it! The user now has a standalone email address that can be used for password resets or other functions.
