Upgrading from SmarterMail Ver. 4 to 11
Question asked by Michael Barber - 11/11/2014 at 10:29 AM
Answered
I need to upgrade a server that is currently running SmarterMail ver 4 and upgrade it to ver 11.  Can I simply install the ver 11 on top of the ver. 4 and it will move the email and boxes over or is there a different procedure?

Essentially that should work. However please ensure you make full backups of all your smartermail data just in case

Hi Michael,

In version 7.x we implemented hefty file structure changes. For this reason, we'd recommend doing this upgrade in two steps. First, upgrade to version 7.x and ensure the installation is functioning as expected. It's not possible to downgrade to an earlier version of SmarterMail once you've upgraded to 7.x so be sure to do a complete backup in case you need to revert. Once you've ensured everything is running smoothly, complete the upgrade to version 11.x. You can find the complete upgrade instructions here: Major Upgrade of SmarterMail.

As an aside, is there a reason you're upgrading to only version 11.x? We recently released version 13.x which offers many added features and improvements. I just wanted to make you aware of that, in case you weren't already. You can find more information on the major features/changes available per version here: What's New in SmarterMail.

If you have any questions after looking over this process please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks!

Keep in mind there were multiple reports of it working just fine when upgrading straight. Especially if you don't have a huge data folder, I would backup and upgrade directly.

Our licenses are backwards compatible so your version 12.x license will work on all versions 12.x and below.

Thanks for that note Steve! A straight upgrade should work as well. I believe the reason we recommend doing this in separate steps is that in case there IS an issue, we can pinpoint more directly what caused it.
