Allow different authenticated address / from address ?

Hi,

I have a costumer which uses his ERP system to send e-mails through my Smartermail server.

He has configured a default account for his system, so all e-mails are sent from erp@example.com.

But this system uses the user's address as the sending address, so the e-mail must be sent using one e-mail address (erp@example.com) but using the logged user's e-mail address as "from address"(john@example.com).

When this happens they get this error: "550 from address must match authenticated address" and the e-mail is not sent.

I have three questions:

1. I don't remember changing anything on my server configuration, but my costumer says that his ERP has always worked this way and he started getting this error recently. I have not upgraded Smartermail recently. What could have happened? (Maybe I changed some config but I don't remember...)

2. Is there a way to allow that behavior?

3. Is it dangerous to allow it? Is there any downside to it?

Thank you!!
Rafael

Hi Rafael,

There is a setting in SmarterMail that requires the authenticated email address to be the same as the from address.  This setting is found as the system admin under Settings | Protocol Settings | SMTP in tab and change the "Require Auth Match" to None.  Then your customer should be able to send out from there ERP as before.

Hi Brian,

Thank you very much for your help. It is working now.
The setting is still rigid, in 2025 this setting is None, Email Address or Domain, but should also include Email or Alias, as domain is too broad and Email Address is limited.

Considering for a while now smartermail has allowed you to send as an alias, so I'm completely surprised that alias isn't included in this setting by default, but this suggested setting could serve two audiences. This should be along with allowing to login with alias instead of account username setting.

Change the setting to Domain, not None, done ERP and John are in the same domain.
