How to enable spam checks for forwarding aliases, no local recipients
Question asked by Chris Denning - 4/18/2015 at 9:29 AM

I've just purchased and installed SmarterMail to replace hMailServer.  My primary usage for this mail server is aliases for forwarding to other mail accounts, for example on Gmail.  I hardly have any users/mailboxes/"local recipients".

In the delivery log, I'm seeing messages saying
Skipping spam checks: No local recipients
However, I need spam checks to run on all mail received, because if I forward too much mail that's considered spam, systems like gmail will flag me as suspicious. For example I'm seeing:
15:52:12 [54025] RSP: 550-5.7.1 Our system has detected that this message is
15:52:12 [54025] RSP: 550-5.7.1 likely unsolicited mail. To reduce the amount of spam sent to Gmail,
15:52:12 [54025] RSP: 550-5.7.1 this message has been blocked. Please visit

15:52:12 [54025] RSP: 550 5.7.1 more information. q20si7973496wiv.60 - gsmtp
I've set my spam filtering settings to delete emails with spam score of medium or high, but the filtering isn't even running.

Searching for answers, I see the SmarterMail 4.x changelog includes:
  • EFFICIENCY: When a message contains no local recipients, it will no longer spawn a spam check thread. This should lower overall system thread usage and enhance remote delivery speeds.
However, this needs to be configurable.  I've searched the forums and look through the settings, but can't see a way to enable spam checks for forwarding aliases.

Can anyone help?

One possible solution would be to scan Outgoing mail for spam rather than trying to get the incoming checked. That's just off the top of my head and might be wrong!

I need this functionality too.
We're running two gateways to handle the load and need to enable the functionality for Spam filtering checks and Incoming SMTP Blocking rules.

I tried the suggested outgoing spam scanning, but it didn't work, still getting this:

Our gateways are set up like smartertools outlined and using
Gateway Mode: Domain Forward
User Verification: Web Service (which I just found out keeps a local cache of users in case the primary is offline - you will still receive mail)
Domain Verification: All (Web Service)

Ideas SmarterTools?
