Syncing /w iOS Outlook App (By Microsoft)
Question asked by Ben Santiardo - 3/27/2015 at 11:39 AM
Unanswered
Hello,

I recently downloaded the Microsoft Outlook App on my iPhone. I attempted to link my account to my host's provided SmarterMail system, the same way I linked to the Outlook App on my PC, and on the regular E-Mail App on my iPhone. However, when I finish the process, I get an error stating:
          "Unable to Login"

I am using the following settings:
    Type: IMAP
     Incoming & Outgoing SSL: Disabled
     Incoming Port: 143
     Outgoing Port: 587

These are the same settings that worked everywhere else that I linked to....but in the iOS Outlook App it gives that error mentioned above. Does anyone know if it works and how to sync to this app? Has anyone successfully done it?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

-Ben

I might be asking obvious questions, but:
  • can you telnet to the IMAP port from outside your network?

  • did you map the ports to the IP address in SmarterMail and add the certificate to the new ports?

  • are the ports open in your server firewall?

  • if you are hosted somewhere, are the ports open on thier network?

Bruce,

Thank you for your reply. I will answer your questions to the best of my ability.

Yes I can telnet to the IMAP port successfully.

The SmarterMail Server is hosted by the company that I am purchasing Hosting Space from. I do not control the SmarterMail server. However, I have successfully connected using IMAP from the iOS native mail client as well as from MS Outlook 2007 on my PC. The ports I supplied are the ones I have used with these other mail clients and have been able to connect successfully.

Contacting MS Support regarding their iOS App, they claim that the error must stem from an incompatibility in SmarterMail and that it is not their software. While I do not pretend to understand exactly how the protocol works, I am a computer programmer myself and from my understanding IMAP should work the same regardless of client... I mean, it is a standard protocol so shouldn't it work?

I was just curious to know if anyone else experienced this issue and had any suggestions or a resolution that they implemented themselves. Being that I do not control the SmarterMail server myself...there is little I can do other than to contact the support department for my hosting company and offer them suggestions on how to fix the issue if I find one.

Yes it can and does. We have a large number of customers using it with IMAP as well as ActiveSync.

I'm experiencing the similar situation: imap connection with Outlook iOS not working; Outlook Android does work.
