Mail in folder but not displaying?

Hey guys,
I've had a few lingering problems with my sent items box for a while including an inability to search. Working with Smartertools support I completely deleted then recreated the index which seemed to have helped that. However now I went to find an old sent item but couldn't find it. On closer inspection I'm missing about 1 years worth of sent items! I checked the server and the files are in the folder for the missing days. Any ideas?

  1. Log out of the user's account.
     
  2. Stop the SmarterMail service.
     
  3. Delete the file, "mailbox.cfg," found in the directory which contains the files for the folder with the "missing e-mail" 
     
  4. Start the SmarterMail service
     
  5. Log back into the user's e-mail account
     
  6. The mail should all be back.

seems that if you delete the root.cfg file they come back!
