Multiple User Sessions When Using Only IMAP
Problem reported by CCWH - 3/24/2015 at 9:04 AM
Not A Problem
Hello all,

We seem to be getting multple connections from multiple IMAP accounts.  So, for instance, one client who has 11 mailboxes shows as having 30+ 'online users' under User Activity even though there is only 5 PCs with the mailboxes configured.

This is not just one client.  It seems a few clients have this...including one of my own IMAP accounts.  If you see the image below, you can see 6 IMAP connections showing at the same time but all from one PC with one account.  The top one if my phone and only shows a single connection.

I have spoken to the clients and apart from all using IMAP there doesn't seem to be any other link.  They use an array of email clients, from Mac Mail, Outlook 2010 & 2013.

Does anyone else see these multiple online users for the same mailboxes?  Is it that the client-side is not dropping the connection or is it the server-side?

Any thoughts would be great!

it is possible for email client software to open multiple sessions when using IMAP.  Outlook is known for doing such.  SmarterMail does not control this.  As I said, it's a client decision on how they implement the connections.

The Android operating system also opens multiple connections from smartphones.

Thanks for the replies and confirmation.  Mac Mail must be doing the same too now then.
