UDP port used by Smarter Mail
Problem reported by M G - 1/24/2015 at 8:38 AM
Not A Problem
Hi Guys,

I'm having an hard time find the UDP port/ports that Smarter Email is using on the server. I have enabled the ranges 1024-65535 for the moment and I have no idea how to get exactly what ports its using.

Any idea will be much appreciated!

Mike

If I block the ports then then emails are just stuck in the spool so it must use them.

Hi there!

I'm not terribly technically inclined so forgive me if I'm wrong with this, but these are the Commonly Used Ports for SmarterMail. I'm not sure if there's a difference between what's listed here and a UDP port, but I imagine if it's not listed in this article then SmarterMail does not utilize them.

I'll see if I can get someone a bit more technical to take a look at this for you and correct me if I'm wrong.

SmarterMail uses UDP on port 53 for DNS resolution.

Thanks for the correction, Robert! Mike, I updated the KB article on Commonly Used Ports to include this information as well.

I updated the KB article above to include the UDP Port, 53.

Thank you for your reply Andrea. I found that page already and opened the port written there.

Hi Robert, Thank you for your reply. I have this open already. The port seems to be within the range of 50000-60000. Does this make sense?

What version of SmarterMail are you using? Legacy versions used port 50001 for communicating between the server and web interface (TCP not UDP). However, that port is no longer used. If the messages are getting stuck in the spool, it is probably because it cannot do the DNS lookups. Ensure UDP on port 53 is open.

I'm using version 11.7 freeversion as of now. On our other server we are using a paid older version which works fine. I'm scratching my head over this as you can imagine :) I appreciate the help!

Tried to open 50001 and 53 has been open the whole time. Narrowed down the port to between 50000 to 55000. Opening 50001 by itself does nothing at the moment.

It should be said that port 53 UDP is for DNS only. If you do not run DNS on your smartermail server then you do not need to open this port.

I am uncertain about that port being added to the KB since it is not need directly by Smartermail.

Good point, Steve. I'll make that more clear in the article.
