SM 16 trying to send to an e-mail with ' in the e-mail
Problem reported by Matthew Shepard - 8/8/2017 at 10:13 AM
Resolved
We are having an issue where if we try to make a new e-mail and type in the e-mail address or even copy and paste it into the to field, that has an apostrophe (bill.o'brien@example.com). It will not accept the e-mail address. As soon as we tab to the next field or click to the body of the e-mail it goes away and does not become the button object. The only way we have found to e-mail these people is to either reply to an e-mail that we may have gotten from them or clicking on their e-mail address inside an existing e-mail and clicking the e-mail option from the drop down. I have had to resort to using the message archive to drop e-mails from one person's account to another in order for other people to e-mail these addresses that have not done it before. It seems to only affect e-mails address with an apostrophe.

Hi Matthew.  I'm seeing this as well.  I'll get this over to the developers to be fixed.

Hi Matthew,

Thanks for the report! This issue is resolved on our servers here and will be included in our upcoming minor release. I'm going to mark this as Resolved. After upgrading, please be sure to let us know if you're still having trouble.

Who knew that an apostrophe was allowed in email addresses? There's a new one for me.

And what if the apostrophe is a generic single quote ("typewriter apostrophe") vs. a "right" single quote?

Just did some quick research: It IS a valid construct, of course, but given the difficulties, I'd advise people to not use these - no surprise there.

This came up in a Web search:

<a target="_blank" href="https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/28977893/Is-an-apostrophe-'-in-an-email-address-really-valid.html">https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/28977893/Is-an-apostrophe-'-in-an-email-address-really-valid.html</a>

And you can easily search for other online comments on the topic.

Thanks, ST, for dealing with this "occasional" issue!

Absolutely, Thanks to smartertools team to fix this one since it is a minor problem. I agree, I would never have let anyone have an apostrophe in their e-mail address; it doesn't make sense and seems to me like more people would have problem e-mailing it because of forgetting the apostrophe.

That's impressive that this obscure issue was reported, received a reply from ST the same day, and was fixed 2 days later. But what about priorities? This thread had 2 votes and couldn't have affected more than 100 out of the 15 million users on SM -- about 0.0007%.

My suggestion is that you look at issues that have more votes and affect millions of users, such as:
Not trying to be negative here or disrespect Matthew's post as it's certainly legit. Just trying to improve the process for maximum benefit of all customers. We like SmarterMail and hope to use it many years into the future. Thanks for the consideration.

True. I think the ones with larger numbers of upvotes should take higher priority. What this instance might mean is that they look at all thread posts and if it is a really quick fix they go ahead and do it. Which spending 5 minutes on a quick fix instead of a different problem with larger upvotes won't really hurt being able to fix the high upvote problem; but I don't know how they do priorities or anything.

Agreed. With a 5-minute fix, just do it. But there doesn't seem to be a formula as other posts could be resolved easily. Here's an example of a 1-minute fix that hasn't been touched:

For the big picture, it would be nice to see a roadmap:
