Problem reported by evan heller - 9/30/2014 at 4:23 PM

Hi while attempting to send email to any domain hosted on 1and1 servers, I get the following errors:

19:23:46 [40271] Exception: Received an unexpected EOF or 0 bytes from the transport stream.
19:23:46 [40271] Connecting to 74.208.5.3

19:23:47 [40271] CMD: STARTTLS
19:23:47 [40271] RSP: 220 OK
19:23:47 [40271] Exception: Received an unexpected EOF or 0 bytes from the transport stream.

I tested using the email address test@saintjamesinsider.com . Has anyone seen this or have any idea where this would come from or cause it? mxtoolbox does not indicate any issues on the domain sending or receiving.

Evan:  I just responded to your e-mail note, but will also post here:

After testing your domain name,  nothing was found to indicate there is a problem with your domain name, rDNS, SPF, or any other part of your DNS or configuration.

Here's a link to a report which shows you as clean: http://www.dnsinspect.com/palace-designs.com/1412187069

Here's a more specific MX server test which also indicates no issues seen.

Clicking on the red 0, under the RBLs header, will open another window which will show you your RBL (real-time blacklist) status, and indicates you are on none.  Note that sometimes this list shows MX servers on Brazilian lists, but, unless you regularly do business in Brazil, they can be ignored.

You can replicate this at: http://www.dnsstuff.com/mstc.  A free account is required:

With the exception of three minor issues, show below, your server also tests clean in another reporting tool.

This test can be re-created here: http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools#dnsReport|type=domain&&value=palace-designs.com, but will require a free account ot do so:

When testing directly to the e-mail address you supplied, both to me personally, and in the original post, the message is rejected as MAILBOX DOES NOT EXIST:

Could not deliver message to the following recipient(s):

Thanks, that is what I would expect the error should be. The next question is if this is an error with this version of Smartermail or if it's a configuration error.

The 550 ERROR is generated by the receiving domain.  It is telling SmarterMail that the mailbox does not exist on the remote MX server.

EDIT: ADDENDUM:  If you have another error, please post it, or check the list of error messages and codes I've compiled in the article at:

Ah, there's the rub, in Smartermail 6.8, I don't get a 550 error. I get a 601 error.

Failed Recipient: test@saintjamesinsider.com
Reason: Remote host said: 601 Attempted to send the message to the following ip's:  74.208.5.21, 74.208.5.3

The reason for the 601 according to the "detailed" logs of the SMTP is:  Exception: Received an unexpected EOF or 0 bytes from the transport stream.

So what's causing the exception?
