Smartermail Upgrade from Professional Version 4.3.2903 to Ver 12

I need to upgrade from a very, very old version of Smartermail 4.3 to Ver 12.  Can someone tell me the exact KB article I need to follow for this?
 
It is unclear to me if I need to uninstall SmarterMail or not.  I'm moving SO MANY versions the KB doesn't seem to address my issue.

You can follow the knowledge base article below (please note step 4) but a an extra step will need to be taken since you are upgrading from such an older version.  You will need to go to version 7 first as there is a major file structure change there.  Based on the size of your install the process could take some time.  Then after version 7 is complete upgrade to versions 13.  All this is noted in the knowledge base article below.

Thanks Brian. However, that KB seems to cover going from Version 8 to version 13. What about going from version 4 to version 7. Do I just install directly on top? Or, is the upgrade process from Version 4 to 7 exactly the same? Also, will be license for 13, allow me to get version 7? And, when does it do the version 7 file structure change...is there something special for that or does the install handle that change on its own?

Hi Michael,
 
You will want to uninstall version 4 then install version 7.  After the update is complete uninstall version 7 and install version 13.  You never want to install on top of an existing version.

So a version 12 license will work with version 7?

No, but you will only be on version 7 long enough for it to convert the file structure. Then uninstall V 7 and install V 13.

Michael, all SmarterTools licenses are backwards compatible. This means you can use a newer license on any older version. Your version 12.x license can be used to activate a version 7.x installation. After your upgrade to 7.x, you can log in and make sure everything is working correctly. Then continue your upgrade process to version 12.x.

I uninstalled and then installed version 7 but it won't work. I switched it to asp.net 4.0 but it fails with this error message: Unable to find assembly 'SmarterMail.Config, Version=7.6.4100.17018, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=c39d3348656e516c'.

No, the problem was the license. Its resolved now.
