Setting up Outlook 2013 Using Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync

Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync is a data synchronization protocol that uses push technology to sync email, calendars, contacts, tasks and notes to Outlook 2013 and 2016 for Windows and a variety of mobile devices and tablets, including Android, iOS, and Windows devices. (To utilize an Exchange ActiveSync connection, an active trial or yearly license is required.)

NOTE: As listed in the SmarterMail System Requirements, SmarterMail requires a Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit or higher to run on. While earlier versions may succeed, attempting to enable ActiveSync for use with Outlook 2013 on a Windows 2003 server will result in connectivity issues.

Applies to SmarterMail 8.x - 15.x

Setting up Outlook to connect to a SmarterMail mailbox is very simple. Two things to note, however, before you get started:

  1. Make sure you are connecting an account that has Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync enabled for it. For more information, see Configure Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync for Email Accounts.
  2. Make sure your mail domain has a valid SSL certificate as Outlook 13 requires a SSL connection when using EAS. For more information, see Configure SSL/TLS to Secure SmarterMail.

To set up Outlook with Exchange ActiveSync, complete the following steps:

  1. Open up Outlook 2013 and click on the File tab.
  2. Click Add Account.
  3. Click the radio button next to Manual setup or additional server types.
  4. Click Next.
  5. When presented with the Choose Service screen, select or Exchange ActiveSync compatible service.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Enter your user, server and logon information. Be sure to use your full SmarterMail address for the E-mail Address. Your mail server address will generally be in the form of "". (If you are unsure of the mail server address, please contact your SmarterMail Administrator or hosting provider.)
  8. Click Next.
  9. Outlook will automatically test your account settings. When the connection is successful you simply need to close the Test Account Settings pop up and your account is created!
  10. Click Finish to complete the setup of your SmarterMail account in Outlook 2013.

Is this system still working even for the latest SmarterMail releases?

It may work, but it's not recommended nor is it supported. MAPI/EWS should be used when synchronizing supported desktop versions of Outlook for Windows. (I.e., Outlook 2016 and above.) EAS is a mobile-only syncing protocol. For older versions of Outlook, IMAP is probably the better route as EAS has proven to be highly unreliable.
