Smartermail extension integration

Hello everyone.
I have been using SmarterMail for some time now, and I am very satisfied with its performance. However, I would like to implement some custom changes to the mail service on my own.

My question is: Is it possible to develop a custom extension or add-on and integrate it with SmarterMail to extend its existing functionality? If so, I would greatly appreciate a brief overview of how this can be achieved.

Hi,

SmarterMail is a commercial piece of software covered by SmarterTools' End User License Agreement (EULA), and not open source. While it is fully API-driven, which allows users to integrate it with virtually any other product, customizing SmarterMail or making custom changes is simply not allowed by our EULA. 

That said, what is it you're trying to accomplish? "Custom changes to the mail service" is a bit broad.
