Windows to Linux Conversion Issues
Problem reported by William Nisbet - 5/17/2025 at 3:30 PM

Hi all,

Looking for some help.

I've tried to migrate over to an Ubuntu server from Windows, and I just can't get through the conversion wizard.

I copied the Settings over, however if I copy every folder over from the Smartermail folder, I get to the paths screen on the wizard, then I get a paths error flashing up for a second, and the next button becomes disabled. Revisting the page just shows a blank page.

I then started again and this time I tried moving the settings and just the Domains folder, This lets me proceed further, but when I get to the Certificates path screen, I get a green "Paths updated", but the screen doesn't change. I don't have any certificates in this folder on Windows, and it seems like it's looking for something.

Any ideas?

Hi William! What user owns the /etc/smartermail and /opt/smartermail folders in your installation? Is it a specific user or are they defaulted to root? I suspect one of your JSON configuration files may not actually be getting updated.

I am having our QC team do a couple of test migrations from Windows-->Linux and vice versa to look for anything that we may be able to correct in that process, but I recommend submitting a ticket on this in the meantime so our support team can check things out with you and provide guidance.

There are a lot of areas you might run into trouble from permissions in Linux, to missing files or different pathing, so getting eyes on the environment might be our best bet.
