Issue with migrating from SM 15x to the latest SM version - Outbound Gateway Assigned

Hey guys!

I resolved this issue already, but I wanted to mention it here just in case anyone else experiences. Last Friday I performed a migration for a customer. I moved his domains from SM 15x to the latest version of SM. When I tested mail flow it was not working properly so I started to dig. I found that for some reason, all of the domains I moved were somehow set to use an outbound gateway. I did not set this, and the domains I moved were not using any outbound gateway on SM 15x. I resolved it by setting the domains to use no outbound gateway. I'm not sure what caused that glitch, but I thought I should report it just in case someone else has the issue. Also... I noticed that a handful of users were detached after I migrated. I had to manually remove them and re-add them. I'm guessing that happened because of some glitch in the conversion process.

Linda, thanks for sharing. Just to be clear, so instead of upgrading the 15.x server, you copied the files to a new server running the latest version?

We still have a server running 15.7, so looking at different ways to upgrade. Installing the latest version seems risky. Thinking about upgrading to some stable version in between 15.7 and latest build.

Does anyone have more experiences (or recommendations) for upgrading 15.x?

Thanks!
Kevin

Yes, instead of upgrading the source server, I simply moved the 15x domains to the newest SM environment and attached them. They then converted to the newest version. Typically, the best thing to do would have been to upgrade the 15x server first, but that was not an option for this particular migration.

We have updated several SmarterMail 15 servers to the latest version at the time (100.0.x)

1.- We made a backup of the SmarterMail configuration (c:\Program Files (x86)\SmarterTools....)
2.- We uninstalled SmarterMail 15 and restarted the server.
3.- We installed the new version of SmarterMail, logged in, and started the file conversion process. The process worked correctly.
4.- We updated the domains to set their hostname as: mail.DOMAIN.
5.- We changed the SSL configuration; previously, we used .cer, and now we use pfx file
6.- We configured the new features offered by SmarterMail.

Overall, it works very well, and we haven't had any issues following these steps.
