Webmail build 9014 (Sept. 5, 2024): Default sender mail address is wrong
Problem reported by Stefan Mössner - 9/9/2024 at 11:35 PM
Being Fixed
Hi all,

since SmarterMail build 9014 (Sept. 5, 2024) there's an issue with the standard sender address in webmail: When answering a mail the standard mail address should be used but it isn't. When forwarding a mail or writing a new mail the standard sender address is used as it should be.

Kind Regards

What is showing up in its place when you hit Reply, if not the "standard mail address"?

Hello Jorel,

today, I installed build 9021 with first uninstalling build 9014. Although you wrote that this issue will be fixed in the next release and there's a hint in the release notes for build 9021 I can't confirm that the issue is solved.

Kind Regards

Stefan,

What isn't working? Your initial issue/post issue? I just tested on an alias, a domain alias, and a direct email and all three chose the proper alias FROM address, them my actual account address. Are you sure the alias you're using has the ability to be used as a "From"?

Derek,

yes it's still the same issue. I have my domain mail address and two adresses for sending mails via external mail services (relay). And one of these relay adresses is my standard mail address. For new mails and forwarding mails my standard FROM address is set. For answering mails another FROM address is set.

Kind Regards

Hi, Stefan

So, when you look at your webmail settings (Settings > Account -> the Webmail card), do you have the following set up?

Default From Address: your standard address
Use To: address for replies is toggled ON

If those are set properly, we may need to open a ticket with you. Sorry, I assumed this was based on sending/receiving using an alias.

Hi Derek,

these settings are set properly. I haven't changed these for years. I can't open a ticket because I'm a home user of the free edition.

Kind Regards

We also are on 9014 (Sep 5, 2024) and this is happening to me.  We are enterprise and have multiple domains active.  The following example is my own account.  I have several aliases and can send from many but the "from" shown on screen is not at all related to any of the "to" fields in the original message.  This only appears to me on reply messages.  The reply should be from my name (or default) but admin is nowhere in this email so the issue appears to be specific with the setting of "use To: address for replies" setting.  If disabled the default is used regardless of to (which is as expected).

Hi, David

I'd recommend trying the upgrade to 9021 we released last week. It has a fix for the issue. After upgrading, let us know if you're still seeing the issue.

This is resolved for me using :

Build 9021 (Sep 12, 2024)

For me the issue is related to an external SMTP account that is selected as default sender address and it's related to webmail. I don't use aliases. And the release notes of build 9021 are talking about an issue with aliases which is solved.

There's a ticket opened and there's a workaround. I call it workaround because it works but for me this isn't consistent.

That's what SmarterTools support is writing:

I believe I have discovered the issue. There is a toggle called "Use To: address for replies." When this is enabled, the Default From Address can be overwritten when an SMTP account or an Alias is present and in the To address field of an email being replied to. You can find the setting under: Settings > Account > Webmail

I was able to replicate when I added an additional SMTP account and EWS account. It seems SmarterMail's logic for selecting the From address when the “Use To: address for replies” option is enabled is consistent but is somehow reliant on some other factor than the To: address like it should. This lead me to believe I was not replicating the issue.
I can confirm that this solution is working. But I don't think that this is the right way. Normally, it's OK if the default address will be overwritten by the SMTP account that is in the TO field of the mail that I'm answering. In most cases it's my default address. But if this setting is activated, the SMTP account in the TO field won't be written into the FROM field. Instead another address is written into the FROM field. So in my opinion there's something going wrong.

I have this setting activated for years. SmarterTools will check this behavior which seems to have changed since build 9014:

Please understand that I'm unfortunately unable to provide a timeline of when this will be addressed by the development team, as it may take them some time to research and review the problem, then implement a solution. However, we will provide you periodic updates on the progression of this resolution. We also ask that you keep an eye on the release notes of future builds for information relating to this functionality.

With the newest build 9042 there's a change regarding the option "Use To: address for replies.":

  • Changed: "Use To: address for reply" setting changed to “Use received address from message on reply”.
  • Fixed: “Use received address from message on reply” does not function correctly with multiple SMTP accounts.
After updating to build 9042 I can confirm for now that this seems to work as expected. I will check this the next days to see if there are situations where this doesn't work as it should.
