I'll answer myself: I tried to migrate a couple of small servers from the 8930 to the new 8972.
Result: some users (only 3-4, luckily there are 2 servers with a few dozen users in total) have started to report that they no longer receive emails on MS Outlook (MAPI), while on WebMail everything is OK.

Maybe it's a stupid thing that can be solved in 2 minutes, but unfortunately I don't have time to test and/or open tickets theese days, so... Let's go back to the old 8930...

Hi Gabriele

I do not see this issue with MAPI retrieval on 8972 yet, knock knock.

I'm getting a lot of system notices that "Servername has xxxxx messages in the spool." And I'm not seeing any evidence in the server reports or email logs to explain this notice.

I can confirm something is going on with the Spool in 8972

Smartermail/Spool/all folders are full of .hdr files

Ticket submitted - Ok, most of the stuff in the spool is failed dmarc and spam, it seems like the system is not processing these notices, and they are getting left in the spool.

Still on 8930 and I dont dare to upgrade.

We are seeing EAS issues on mobile devices not seeing the full inbox and mails dissapearing sometimes.

Thats the only thing I have seen yet.

On 8972 and we're having customers reporting multiple issues:

- Some are experiencing "garbage" subjects with foreign/accented chars not correctly display at their recipient
- Some are receiving mails with empty bodies and/or "garbage" subjects
- Some can't send mail to certain recipients, the server returning "Illegal char in From".

It mostly all seem related to encoding issues, probably introduced by UTF8 support in SMTP/IMAP etc...

Also confirmed in the second "guinea pig" server, problems on:
- IMAP: some problems in Outlook
- SMTP outbound queue: mail not delivered
- MAPI (Outlook): mail not arrived in INBOX, but present in WebMail
- EAS: emails moved in Outlook not synchronized on SmartPhones, but OK in WebMail and Outlook

Now I have brought everything back to the 8930 and I no longer see any problems...

Currently just stay away from any updates unless you have an urge to be yelled at on the phone and getting client subscription cancellations....

Outlook MAPI synchronization problems confirmed by a customer who has an on-premise SmarterMail server (they managed to update to 8972 on their own).

I gave them the link to v.8930, they downgraded and now everything is ok...

So, downgrading to 8930 is an approved downgrade?

I had the same problem in MAPI upgrading to 8860, but the problem disapear without any action after a few weeks. I thinks that should be related with counters. Is the only explanation I can get to start working again by her self.

@J Lee - support told us (in a ticket we opened the morning after taking 8965) that it's OK to downgrade to 8930.  We did, and saw no ill effects.

@J Lee: I have downgraded 3 servers from 8972 to 8930 without issues...

Those that are successfully downgrading to 8930, what environment are you running?
